Full commercial application: Xara XS, worth £28

Screengrab_11If you want to design a logo or a graphic for your website or other media, you might look at Photoshop or Illustrator and wonder where to start. One option is to pay a graphic designer to create you a logo, a cheaper and better long-term option would be to download a design tool such as our free full commercial download, Xara XS, worth £28.

Xara XS is the baby brother of the 5-star rated Xara Xtreme, which is a vector and graphics design tool. It will enable you to draft a vector diagram, edit your photos or touch up graphics for your website. If you want to go further, take a look at the brand new Xara Xtreme Pro, which will import Adobe Photoshop PSD images, amongst other new and improved features.

Download Xara XS and try the powerful and fast design tool for yourself. If you're impressed, we'd seriously recommend the discounted upgrade to Xtreme or Pro.

Create your own installer using NSIS

Screengrab_91Distributing files for download across the Internet isn't always easy, especially if you're supplying them on a free-of-charge basis. Buying and using a professional-level installer development tool is probably overkill for what you're intending. You simply want to get your application or files, installed within the right place on the end-users machine.

With this in mind, we can recommend a couple of free installer design tools. NSIS 2.22 is a superb installer maker that will create anything from a basic 'copy the files to this location' installer to a more advanced routine that will search the Internet for new updates, before it finishes the installation routine.

Inno Setup 5.1.8 is another free option and has been around for a long while.

Sync bookmarks across your machines with Google Sync

Screengrab_90 When you're at work, you stumble across a website that you want to add to your bookmarks. Solution? You need to email the web link to your home email address. When at home, you find a web page for work and you then need to do the same thing and then remember to add the link to your bookmarks. Frustrating as we like to keep the same bookmarks on our different computers.

Google Browser Sync for Firefox 1.3.2 enables you to install the same extension on any version of Firefox (including Windows and Mac OS X) and then sync your bookmarks across each copy of Firefox. So, your work and home machine, Windows or Mac, can all share the same bookmarks. Better still, add or remove a bookmark on one machine and the other machine automatically updates the next time you start Firefox!

This is a wonderful extension and recommended. Downlod Google Browser Sync for Firefox 1.3.2 and start syncing your bookmarks.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8: complete hard disk toolkit

Screengrab_89 The average size of a hard disk these days is 250GB or higher. What do you do with 250GB of space? Surely you aren't going to use this as one large 250GB hard drive? One solution would be to split the drive in to multiple partitions, perhaps a partition that you use to store the music you downloaded from the Internet. Multiple smaller partitions make it easier to backup your data as you can simply backup that partition.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 Personal is a complete hard drive management toolkit that will serve all your partitioning, backup, restore and drive clone requirements. If you have an old PC and want to move across a partition, clone the drive. If you want to partition your drive, those tools are included. You can backup and restore your data, too. It's all there, bundled together within one interface.

Download Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 Personal for yourself and see if it helps you to manage your drive and drive contents.

Take a system screengrab with Screenshot Captor

Screengrab_88 There are some tools that would be handy if they were built-in to Windows. One of these tools is a high-end screen grabbing tool that enables you take a grab of an active window, or a flash animation, rather than the standard 'print screen' screen dump.

Luckily there are a number of free screen grabbing tools available and one of them is a favourite of ours, Screenshot Captor 2.28.01. Rated as a 5-star product by vnunet.com and end-users, it's such a flexible and well-designed tool. You can quickly choose to grab your entire screen, active window, a portion of your screen and even moving animation. You can delay your grab, choose to include the cursor and then export as a high resolution or compressed image. All the options are available.

Download Screenshot Captor 2.2.8.01 for yourself and also check out the free FastStone Capture 4.8.

Backup & restore your drive with O&O Disk Image

Screengrab_87 There are generally two types of data backup: backing up your important individual files at the end of every working day, week or irregularly. The other option is to backup your entire drive or drive partition, so that if you suffer from a system crash, you can quickly restore the entire drive.

However, it's an easy process. You don't have to backup your entire drive each time. Simple use incremental or differential backups to backup data changed since the last backup. Also, you could just backup, say, your work or music partition. You don't want to lose the music you've downloaded from the Internet. Another option is to install Windows, all your key apps, then make a backup point so, instead of re-installing Windows, you could just restore this backed up restore point.

The brand new O&O DiskImage 1.0 will do this rather well. Acronis True Image 10 is another popular option, as well as Paragon Drive Backup 8.

Defragment your hard drive: application roundup

Screengrab_86 Installing and uninstalling software, over a period of time, will result in your Registry being clogged up with old remnants that aren't correctly uninstalled when you remove software from your system. A similar process can occur with your hard drive. When you install software, then uninstall or simply move files around your system, you might find that accessing files takes longer each time you attempt to launch an application.

One solution is to defragment your drive, which will rearrange the contents of your drive so they are in one continuous block. It means applications launch faster and your system boots more quickly. IObit Defrag 1.1 is a beta version of a forthcoming free defragmentation tool. Other options include Diskeeper 2007, OO Defrag 8.5 or the free and popular Auslogic Disk Defrag 1.1.

Compare two documents, side to side, with WinMerge

Screenshot_1 You spend the whole week working on some code and then take the weekend off. Get in on Monday, compile, then realise that it's actually a bit of a mess. It's easier to go back to the previous code, from the start of the week, rather than debug. You'll need to go through the old (working) code and the new (buggy) code, side by side, to see the differences between the two.

WinMerge 2.6 is a free tool that enables you to load a document and then compare it against another. This is ideal for coders as you can quickly see the differences between your old and updated code. You can then make necessary changes or merge some of the old work in to the new document.

If you're a web developer or a programmer, download WinMerge 2.6 and see how it compares to your existing tools.

Move your work from computer to computer with the PortableApps Suite

Screengrab_85What's easier, carrying around a heavy notebook everywhere you go, wondering if you'll be able to find a wireless network so you can download and reply to your emails or placing your email client and web browser on a portable USB stick and then using that stick within a computer, wherever it is located?

The PortableApps Suite is a collection of portable applications that you can place on a USB stick and then use this stick on any computer, without leaving behind a trail of personal information. It contains a web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), office suite (OpenOffice) and much more. You can pre-configure and use these apps on your office or home computer then use the same setup on a third-party machine.

If you're often on the move, download the PortableApps Suite and see if it does want you require.

Manage your tasks and meetings using MonoCalendar

Grab140_3 Whether you're in business or have a hectic social life, we all have various events, meetings, tasks and 'to do' requirements. Like most of us, you spend your day in front of a computer, so why don't you make use of this machine by tracking your daily and weekly schedule?

MonoCalendar 0.70 takes its inspiration from Apple's iCal and that's not a bad starting point. iCal is a very well-designed calendar that enables you to set up your meeting arrangements, 'to do' task items, for the day/week/month. MonoCalendar has the look and feel of iCal, with some of the basic functionality. It can only get better, too. Alternatively, look at other projects such as Mozilla Lightning for a similar calendar, that integrates with the Mozilla apps.

Download MonoCalendar 0.70 for yourself and see if it meets your requirements.

Check for software/driver updates with RadarSync

Screengrab_83 If only there was an application that enabled you to analyse the software and drivers installed on your PC, then check against a central database to determine whether there is a new version of your installed application. This would save all the time, hassle and guesswork needed when new drivers and software revisions are released. For instance, do you know what drivers you have on your system, never mind whether they need updating?

One option is the free RadarSync 2007. This application will scan your drivers and installed software, check a central database and then will tell you if there is a new version of the software. However, it often goes wrong, too, informing you that there is a new revision, when the new revision is older than your installed software. The free version is limited and doesn't show direct downloads.

Other options include our free full commercial Driver Genius 5.3 Professional download, but that will only support checking for revisions to your drivers.

Manage and retrieve your web passwords using KeyPass

Screengrab_84 Most of us use similar passwords for different websites. Some of those passwords are generated for us and are very difficult to remember. However, it's not safe to write down your passwords, either on paper or within your computer. One safe way is to use a password manager to securely store your passwords and, with the use of a master password, you'll be able to login to your password manager when you need access to a password. As you only need to remember one login, you can choose a tricky code, so no-one will guess your password manager login.

KeyPass Free 4.3.4 is a free version of the password manager, but is limited to only 10 passwords. Not ideal, but might be worth investigating. Another product, with a similar name, KeePass 1.06 is completely free, without restrictions and rated highly by VNU users.

Store your favourite DVDs using AnyDVD

Screengrab_82 Apple's iTV will soon be available - certainly before Spring 2007. This small hardware device will enable you to stream music and video, from your computer (PC or Mac) to the iTV box and view or hear the media through your hi-fi or TV. As hard drives are so large these days, you could use your computer as storage for your DVD collection. You could then play back your DVDs through the iTV box (or similar), without having to connect a DVD player to your TV. One less box, fewer wires.

Why not start by grabbing your DVDs and storing them on your computer? AnyDVD 6.0.8.5 will enable a PC user to unscramble their DVDs and store them on a hard drive. Of course, this is for personal-use only and you should own the DVDs you want to store on your computer.

There are Mac versions of this type of product, but if you own a PC and a large hard drive, use AnyDVD 6.0.8.5 to grab and store your DVDs.

Full commercial download: WS_FTP Home 2006, worth £22

Boxshot_16 WS_FTP LE used to be given away for free and was a very popular download. We've re-created the original promotion with an up-to-date version of WS_FTP, by offering the full commercial version of WS_FTP Home 2006, worth £22. It's yours to download, without restrictions, but you'll need to hurry as the download offer will expired at the end of 2006.

FTP clients are an essential part of daily life. It's often quicker to download a large file using FTP, then through your web browser. Downloads via FTP can be resumed, for example. Better still, an FTP application will enable you to maintain the files on your homepage, as well as using the space to store files which you can then access from another computer. With your FTP program, you simply need your username and password to access the remote server.

WS_FTP Home 2006
is one of our best free full commercial downloads to date, so grab it yourself before the download offer expires.

Burn your home movies straight to DVD with VideoDVDMaker

Screengrab_71 Home movie making isn't always about grabbing video, downloading it to your PC and then spending time touching up, adding effects and making sure it looks really professional. The best home movies are those taken at opportune moments and look rather raw when they are shown to friends and family. What you want to do is take your videos, choose the best video from a selection, then burn them to DVD for preview.

VideoDVDMaker Free 2.3.0.14 is a free video editing and DVD creation tool that enables you to do the above. Everything can be done within one program. Grab your video, connect your camcorder, download to the software, burn to DVD, without requiring an external program.

If VideoDVDMaker Free 2.3.0.14 is the kind of application the meets your requirements, download and see for yourself.

Store and read daily web news with Feedreader

Screengrab_80 We're not really supposed to browse the Internet during working hours. It's pretty obvious you're browsing the Internet web you have a web browser open and are skimming from site to site, morning and afternoon. An alternative is to subscribe to the news feeds provided by your favourite websites and then use an application to read highlights of the daily news. If anything of particular interest, you can use the link provided to find out more information from the website that provided the news headline.

Feedreader 3.07 is one of many new (RSS) readers that will enable you to subscribe to a news feed provided by a website then will automatically grab the latest headlines for you to examine. If you're really keen, you'll notice that Download Junkie provides a RSS feed, so why not download Feedreader 3.07 and make this your first news feed?

Download YouTube videos using YouRipper 2.1

Screengrab_81 With the ability to shoot and grab video from a mobile phone, the latest craze is to take a video and then share it online, using technology provide by YouTube to host your videos (although YouTube host, you can still embed and view videos from your own homepage). However, there's no easy way to download videos from YouTube for viewing offline, on your computer.

YouRipper 2.10 enables you to grab videos from YouTube and then store them on your computer. Note that the use of this software is for extracting videos for your own personal use only. You do not own the copyright of downloaded videos, so do not share these videos using other distribution methods.

Lecture over. If you're a keen YouTube user, grab YouRipper 2.1 and store your favourite videos on your computer.

Download a website for offline viewing, with Offline Explorer

Screengrab_75 Maybe you don't have the time to browse your favourite websites for the latest news and information, or perhaps you don't have Internet access at work. One way around this would be to download your favourite websites, overnight, on to a USB stick and then take the stick and view those pages on any computer at any location.

If you're planning on becoming a web developer, find out how a website is designed and driven by loading the entire contents and spending time looking over the structure. This is one of the best ways of understanding that the majority of websites are made up of external style sheets which are imported when you load a web page.

Either way, you'll want Offline Explorer 4.5.25 which is a tool that will grab and extract a website and will go as deep as you require, searching through web links and also downloading those pages, too.

Check and audit your new system with Belarc Advisor

Screengrab_67 Computer hardware gets updated quickly. When you look at magazine advert and choose your PC, the configuration may have changed by the time you receive your new computer. In most situations, the hardware you receive betters the configuration of the PC you ordered. However, mistakes can happen - you might order the 500GB hard drive, but received a 300GB drive. You might think you have a 6x dual-layer DVD burner, when it's really only a standard DVD burner.

Either way, Belarc Advisor 7.2.1.7 will help you analyse and audit your new PC and establish the components you have installed. You can then make a print out and present it to the supplier if you think there is a discrepancy.

There are alternatives to Belarc Advisor 7.2.1.7. SiSoft SANDRA 2007 Lite is another good free system auditing tool. Everest Ultimate Edition 3.50 is another good option.

Keep two Outlook databases synchronised with SynchPST

Screengrab_60 Business users often have a desktop computer and then use a laptop on the road or for accessing email at home. However, this often means you have two copies of Outlook, with two different databases. One option would be to keep the emails on the remote server, but with all the junk and spam email, your server might soon be full of email waiting to be deleted.

Another option is to use a tool such as SynchPST 2.2.6 which will enable you to synchronise your Outlook email between two different computers. Of course, it only copies across email received since the last time you ran the synchronisation, so the process should be relatively quick.

If you have two computers using Outlook, download SynchPST 2.2.6 and see if it helps you keep the same email stored across both machines.

Schedule a regular backup using Cobian Backup 8

Screengrab_10 It's so easy to put off backing up your data on a regular basis. We all hate chores, and backing up our data seems like a chore. With PCs being so much more reliable these days, it's not the hardware that is likely to cause problems, it's the software you install on your computer. A system crash at an inopportune moment may result in your extensive 10,000 word proposal becoming corrupt.

Cobian Backup 8.2.0.171 is a fantastic freeware backup tool that enables you to schedule a regular backup. You can backup to another hard drive or a remote FTP site. Backing up your files can be done on an incremental basis, so that it will only backup files that have changed since the last backup. You can set filters, so that it avoids backing up certain files.

We recommend Cobian Backup 8.2.0.171, so try it yourself and see if it meets your backup requirements.

Skype 2.5 now available for Mac OS X users

Screengrab_9 One of the most frustrating part of being a Mac user is that the Mac versions of widely distributed Windows software, aren't always kept as up-to-date. Skype is a classic example. When Skype for Windows was at 2.0, the Mac version was still at v1.x. This means some of the key features, such as video conference calling, wouldn't work on the Mac version of Skype.

This is all about to change as the Mac version of Skype is now at v2.5, offers video conference calling and the other features you'd find in the current Windows edition (bar the features within the Skype 3 beta). For instance, you'll find that the Mac Skype 2.5 now contains SMS support. There's also support for multi-user conference chats, so you can chat with more than one person.

If you're a Mac OS X user, grab Skype 2.5 so you're up-to-date.

Speed up your downloads with a Download Manager

Logo Despite fast broadband, there are still compelling reasons why you should use a download manager to manage how you obtain files from the Internet. For instance, the download manager will sometimes attempt to obtain from multiple locations or will split the download in to smaller parts, thus downloading those parts quickly than one large file. You can also resume files which you download from a manager, so if there are problems with your connection, you don't need to start again from scratch.

FlashGet 1.73 is one of many free download managers available recently. This manager contains all the usual tools and will integrate within your web browser. It's not a browser extension, it's a standalone application and can be used independently from your browser. There are other download managers, such as GetRight 6 (shareware), Free Download Manager 2.1 and Download Accelerator Manager  2.3. FlashGot 0.5 is a free download manager that integrates with Firefox.

Grab, store and manage your audio collection

Grab140_2Up until recently I bought most of my music from the iTunes Music Store. This was up to the point where I realised that every time you re-install Windows or move across to another PC, you're effectively creating a 'new' PC, thus your 5-computer iTunes Music Store license expires, quickly. Now, why should someone tell me how I should manage the music I've purchased legitimately? I've now decided to purchase the CD option, putting myself in control over my music, and where it can be stored/played, even if it means the CD costs a couple of quid more than purchasing online.

Although you can use iTunes as your music store tool, there are alternatives. For instance, OrangeCD Suite 6.04 is a suite that enables you to grab audio from your music CDs, OrangeCD Suite will then find all the information from the Internet - not just the CD tracklist, but also the value of your CD, artwork and much more. You can even publish your collection online for others to see. You could then use the 5-star rated MediaMan 2.6 to lend and control your media library.

Try OrangeCD Suite 6.04 for yourself and see if it's better than Apple iTunes 7.

Manage your archives using the brand new WinZip 11

Grab140_1 Only a few short years ago, using WinZip was the norm on Windows and Stuffit was the standard archive management tool on the Mac. How times have changed. Recently, Apple moved to support ZIP files within the latest Mac OS X and dropped Stuffit. Nowadays, seriously, who chooses to buy and support WinZip? WinZip 10 was only released a short while ago and now we're up to version 11 - are the new features so compelling?

Talking of new features, WinZip 11 now supports the RAR format. The latest WinZip will choose the best compression for you, all automatically, so you don't need to 'worry' about whether you're going to maximise compression when you next create an archive.

However, if you want to create self-extracting archives, that's going to cost more. There's also a professional edition of WinZip, if you need the professional features. Download for yourself. We'd also suggest you look at 7-Zip, ZipGenius and ExtractNow as free alternative archive managers.

Quickly configure a home network using Hamachi

Screengrab_48 Getting your computing connected to the Internet is easy these days. Getting your computers connected to each other, isn't. It should be easy and they should all be able to talk to each other through your local wireless network. Due to the security we install to protect our system from outside Internet attack, these tools also prevent our systems from interacting, out of the box.

Hamachi 1.0.1.1 is a zero-configuration tool that you install on your computers within your local (home) network. It's based around peer-to-peer technology and is secure. Only the computers within your local network can access each other. As it's available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, you can install the same tool across every OS and they'll all talk to each other, without you needing to do any work.

If you have more than one computer at home and you're trying to setup your own home network, try Hamachi and see if it makes networking easier.

Access your iTunes library over the Internet

ScreenrgabManaging your audio collection isn't always easy. Do you keep the same files across all your computers, including your laptop, or do you set up a nifty wireless network so you can stream your audio from one computer to others within your house?

MyTunesRSS 2.3.5 enables you to use one computer to store and manage your iTunes music collection, then access, stream and download your audio to another computer, even if that computer is situated outside your network. For instance, you could access your iTunes collection from your laptop, when you're on the road, via the Internet.

The only downside is that, due to the cross-platform nature of the software, it is based on Java 1.5, which is required. If that's all fine, download and test yourself.

Edit your home video with Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0

Screengrab_42 It's easy to be put off video editing for life if you install and use an application such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro from Apple. These video-editing tools are so advanced it's difficult to know where to start. This is why Apple released Final Cut Express (and the more basic iMovie) and Adobe have released Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, which is now available as a trial download.

With Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 you can do the basic video editing required to create your own home movies and DVD videos you can pass to your friends and family. Import your video, cut to size, add a few effects and then export or burn to disc.

If you work across the Mac and Windows platforms, sadly Premiere Elements 3.0 is Windows-only. However, if you're a pure Windows fan, download and see if it meets your requirements.

Manage your font collection with FontExpert 2006 v8 SR2

Screengrab_5 Font management is a task we easily overlook. For instance, everyone has their favourite fonts, but how many times have you moved to a new computer or re-installed Windows only to remember, at a later date, you forgot to backup and move across your font collection. Indeed, do you even know where your fonts are stored on your system?

FontExpert 2006 v8 SR2 is one of the best font management applications available. On a basic level, you can quickly see the installed fonts on  your system. If a font is problematic, it can be disabled. If you want to add a font, simply drag to the window and it will be installed. You can also group fonts, find and delete duplicates and much more.

Download FontExpert 2006 v8 SR2 and try it for yourself. If you're seeking a basic font viewer, grab the free FastFont Preview 1.1.5.

Daily roundup: 14th of November 2006

Screengrab_38 It's recommended you install a software-based firewall, even if you use a router or broadband modem. Comodo Personal Firewall 2.3.6.81 is a free independent firewall. With Apple Mac's now enabling you to use Windows and Mac OS X on the same machine, why not buy a Mac and take advantage of the strengths of both operating systems? For instance, Rapidweaver 3.5 is a superb Mac-only web design tool that enables you to create just about any website, from the many supplied (customisable) templates.

It's not always easy to see a comprehensive view of the fonts you have installed on your system. FastFont Preview 1.1.5 will enable you to examine the fonts installed, quickly. WinSnap 1.1.8 is yet another (great) freeware screen-grabbing tool, whilst The Dude 2.0 beta 12 (yes, 12!) enables you to map and outline your network. Fresh UI 7.71 will open up options within Windows XP that allow for customisation of the OS.

Full commercial download: NovaPDF 2.5 Lite

Boxshot_1 From time to time, we all need to process and send documents to other computer users and expect them to be able to open and read that document. What format do you select to create your document? A Word document is an obvious choice, but if the end-user doesn't have the fonts that you have your system, an older version of Word may display your document incorrectly.

The obvious choice is a PDF file. A truly cross-platform document type that also enables you to store both the fonts and layout of your images, within the document. This is why we're pleased to be able to offer the full version of NovaPDF 2.5 Lite, a full commercial download worth £10. This tool will enable you to create PDF documents from nearly any Windows application.

Grab NovaPDF 2.5 Lite now before the download offer expires in late December.

Manage your homepage with FTP Voyager 13

Screengrab_26 Whether we sign up to broadband or purchase a domain, we're often given some kind of homepage so we can create a basic website, blog or other web presence. However, few of us use this space. The time required to update a blog is lacking somewhat and we don't have the web skills to create a half-decent site.

This homepage is merely a directory of space - like your own private drive partition, online. This space could be used to backup personal info or to temporarily store files between the office and home.

You need an FTP client to utilise this space, so take a look at the latest FTP Voyager 13.0.0.5. There are free alternatives, such as SmartFTP 2.0.999.4 or FileZilla 2.2.27.

Full program roundup: 13th of November 2006

Screengrab_8 Over the last few months we've been promoting and giving away approximately 1 full commercial application per week. However, it's sometimes difficult to track these promotions, so here's a quick roundup of full commercial apps from the last few weeks:

Paragon Drive Copy 8 SE, worth £13, will enable you to copy your old drive contents to your brand new hard drive. The 5-star rated Paragon Partition Manager 2005, worth £35, will perform all the partitioning tasks you'll require for your new (or old) drive. The superb Driver Genius 5 Pro, worth £17, will catalogue installed drivers, enable you to update these drives and can backup drivers in case you need to restore at a later date. East-Tec Eraser 2006 Lite, worth £10, will securely erase important files and documents, whilst MAGIX Movie Edit 10 Silver, worth £15, will process and edit your video files.

Note: that the download servers can get overwhelmed, so if you fail to download the first time, try again soon. Let us know if you consistently experience download problems.

Quickly bulk-rename files with PFrank

Screengrab_3 We're always seeking ways to become more productive. Working with files, within Windows Explorer, isn't always easy. For instance, if you have a number of files that need to be renamed, unless you go through them manually or know how to create your own script, it's not easy to process the files. If the files are located within different folders, it's even more tricky.

PFrank 1.81 is a tool that will enable you to process and bulk-rename your files and folders, quickly. For instance, if you wanted to add 'FEB-' in front of a number of files, you simply select the files and location, choose the wildcard required then process the files.

The author is so confident that it will perform every renaming task you throw at the program, we suggest you download it immediately.

Messenger Plus! Live for Windows Live Messenger 8.1

Screengrab_27 More of us are turning to online 'friends' rather than chatting with our neighbours. When we want advice, we turn to online forums for other users to make our decisions for us. With this in mind, Windows Live Messenger is one of the many online chat tools you can use to keep in contact with your online friends.

If you're a real fan of Windows Live Messenger, you'll want to customise it as much as possible. Messenger Plus! Live 4.10 enables you to fully customise your copy of Messenger with sounds, backgrounds and more. You can drop contacts directly on your desktop, open multi-tabbed chats and create specific responses you can use to drop in to chats, quickly.

The latest Messenger Plus! Live 4.10 now works with Windows Live Messenger 8.1.

Daily roundup: 10th of November 2006

Screengrab_21 The other day I was thinking about who were the most productive group of software developers. The clear conclusion was security developers. They're also becoming the richest collection of developers, too. How is this possible? Why do we need so much security software simply to browse the web or write a Word document? Which comes first - getting hold of the latest security tool to prevent attack or the malicious tool attempting to attack? I've got a headache trying to figure it all out.

AOL Active Security Monitor 2 has been released. This free app will analyse your system and let you know what you can do to improve the security of your system. Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1.1593 is Microsoft's official anti-spyware tool, whilst Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.17 will protect your system from hackers.

Other new apps include Mozilla SeaMonkey 1.06, which is a complete Internet suite. Clock Tray Skins 3.7 will enable you to add a customised clock to your system tray.

Free Office-compatible office suite: OxygenOffice Pro

Screengrab_4 Why do we rely on commercial office suites when the majority of only use these suites for simple tasks, involving writing formal business letters, invoices, basic stationary design and tracking finances through the spreadsheet? Not many of us really use the presentation or database tools either.

Draw naturally using ArtRage Free 2.2

Screengrab_1 It's not particularly easy to draw using the mouse. That's a fine art in itself. Instead, if you're an illustrator, buy or borrow a drawing pad, connect it to your computer and use a pen to trace a drawing in to your system. From here, you can then naturally paint and improve your image so it appears that you've scanned in a hand-drawn illustration (that's an option too).

There are few natural drawing packages around. ArtRage Free 2.2 is the free version of the commercial drawing tool and worth investigating. There are other options though. For instance, Corel Painter IX.5, also recently updated, is probably the most famous natural drawing tool.

One of the solutions is to prune and cleanse your Registry. The bigger your Registry, the longer it takes to search for the correct information and your system slows as a result. Registry Mechanic is one of the most popular Registry tools and Registry Mechanic 6 has just been released.
