Full commercial app: OrgPlus 6 SBE, worth £15

Boxshot_18 Many organisations aren't always managed very efficiently. Managers are installed to manage their departments and become your 'boss' when you have an issue with that department. However, few organisations bother with any kind of organisation chart so that an employee can see for themselves who reports to who and why. Indeed, many organisations themselves aren't always aware of the management structure within their organisation.

OrgPlus 6 SBE, a full commercial download worth £15, is an organisation charting tool for the small-business user. It enables you to create an organisational chart for your department or your company. It's easy to do, too, as you're supplied with a number of visual templates to get you started. Once you've finished your chart, you can output it to your website, print or incorporate within your literature. Download OrgPlus 6 SBE.

Defrag and free up your memory with MemInfo

Screengrab_108 In the same way that if you install and uninstall software from your computer, your hard drive becomes fragmented, if you start and close applications, your memory becomes fragmented. When you use and then close an application, the files aren't always completely removed from your memory, resulting in a reduced capacity. Not ideal when you only have less than 1GB of RAM installed in your PC.

MemInfo 1.80.1 is a tool that performs two functions. You can quickly see the memory usage when you hold your mouse over the System Tray icon. The other function is to defragment your memory when you believe that your RAM usage is too high, when you only have a couple of open applications.

Download MemInfo 1.80.1.

Share your photos and files with AllPeers

Screengrab_107 Creating your own internal home network is relatively easy, if your computers are all sharing the same router. Sharing your files between these computers is as straightforward as choosing files you want to share and then assigning a password so only authorised users can access the files. Sharing the same files across the Internet is a little more problematic.

AllPeers 0.54.1 enables to use peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing technology to provide photos and files to anyone you add to your network. It uses the Firefox web browser and enables you to add users, add the files you want to share and then leave your computer running with the knowledge only these auhtorised Internet users can access your private files. Of course, anyone within your network can also provide the files to other users. Download AllPeers and see if it meets your requirements.

Xmas Full Commercial Application Roundup

So_boxshot_1 With probably the last Download Junkie post before the Christmas break, I thought it might be wise to have a roundup of the full commercial software still available to download from vnunet.com. With many off us of work until the 2nd of January, it's an ideal time to download these apps and give us your feedback on what you like and dislike. There will be another full commercial application available to download around New Year and through 2007.

Earlier this year we gave way Registry Mechanic 5.0, worth £20. The most recent PC Tools full app is Privacy Guardian 4, again worth £20. We've got various full Paragon Software products online, including Paragon Drive Copy 8 Personal SE, Paragon Partition Manager 2005 and Paragon CD-ROM Emulator 3. We've got a couple of full applications from Ashampoo, including WinOptimizer Platinum 2Dc_boxshotand Burning Studio 5. Other highlights include the fantastic Xara XS, WS_FTP Home 2006, Sun StarOffice 7, Floorplan 8 and MAGIX Movie Edit 10 silver.

Hurry as some of these should have been taken offline and certainly will be taken offline within early 2007!

Separate good websites from the bad, with McAfee SiteAdvisor

Logo_17 Although most advanced users are clued up enough to work out whether a website is a rogue site or legitimate (mainly due to phishing email scams using rather poor English to try and catch us out!), there are so many security applications on the marketplace, many novice users wonder if it's actually safe to download or not.

McAfee SiteAdvisor or Internet Explorer and the same McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox enables you to determine whether the site you're visiting is classed as a rogue or legitimate site, by other users. This information is established by using a number of factors such as whether you receive X number of email communication during a particular period, the types of adverts used on the site and the products available to download. Remember that the sites are graded by the end-user, so some sites can receive an amber warning lamp when it's actually a legitimate and safe website.

VMWare Fusion public beta v Parallels Desktop beta 2

Logo_14 You'd expect software development to be rather quiet at this time of the year. Came in to the office this morning to find a press announcement for the first public beta of VMWare Fusion for Mac. This enables you to run Windows (and other operating systems) in a virtual environment on your Intel-based Apple Mac. It's also free, whilst in beta. You'll need an operating system, and you'll need to buy a copy of Windows XP SP 2, but an OEM version can be bought for around £50 these days.

To make this even more exciting, Parallels have just released beta 2 of their Parallels Desktop for Mac (build 3094). Both have support for USB 2 and Parallels now enables you to use your Bootcamp based partition, so you can now choose to boot through Bootcamp or use the same Bootcamp Windows XP installation through your Mac, via Parallels.

Logo_parallels Believe me, if you're an Intel Mac user, this is exciting. Recently I purchased a 20¨ Core 2 Duo Intel iMac from the Apple refurbished store (these go through a rigorous testing procedure) and Bootcamp makes the machine an ideal Windows XP machine. I still enjoy Mac OS X, so the new version of Parallels should enable me to use my Bootcamp installation through Mac OS X, from time to time.

If you have an Intel Mac or are considering a new PC (and wonder if an Intel Mac would be a good option), read about and/or download VMWare Fusion Mac beta or Parallels Desktop for Mac Update Beta 2.

Full commercial app: Privacy Guardian 4, worth £20

Boxshot_17 Many families share one computer and, although they have their own user account, you only need to move away from your computer to answer the phone or have something to eat and your account is open to anyone who uses the machine. When you browse the Internet and enter personal information online, this information is stored on your computer. Even if you drag the items to trash (or simply delete them), they're easily recoverable.

PC Tools Privacy Guardian 4, a full commercial application worth £20, will enable you to safeguard your privacy as you browse the Internet. As soon as you close your browser, you can wipe your web browsing tracks. If you want to be absolutely sure of your privacy, use the supplied shredder tool which will permanently erase the files. Download PC Tools Privacy Guardian 4 and remember to get your serial code.

Defragment your hard drive with Ashampoo Magical Defrag 2

Screengrab_19 When you write files to your hard drive, these files should be stacked on your drive incrementally after the next file. However, this doesn't always happen and files are stored all over your drive, meaning that it has to work even harder when you start an application at a later date. This is called fragmentation and a fragmented hard drive takes longer to start, longer to load applications and seems slower. Your whole PC seems more sluggish, as a result.

Ashampoo Magical Defrag 2 resides in the background and will slowly defragment your hard drive. This works by relocating blocks of data so they are in one continuous block. If your drive is really badly fragmented, and it's a large drive, you may need to leave your drive defragmenting, overnight. Download Ashampoo Magical Defrag 2.

Customise your Windows XP installation disc with nLite

Screengrab_106 Windows XP is far more customisable than most people realise. For instance, OEM PC manufacturers customise their Windows XP installer CDs and refer to them as a 'restore CD' so, if you ever need to re-install Windows XP, the process is as automated as quick as possible. How do they do this? They customise the original Windows XP install CD - they add their own logo, serial code, localisation, drivers required for the system and more.

nLite 1.3 will enable you to customise your own original Windows XP CD. Better still, you can add your own specific drivers (essential if you have a serial ATA drive), Windows updates, your serial code and much more. If you have the original Windows XP, you can even bring it up and beyond Service Pack 2 level, essential for installing on Apple's Bootcamp, for example. Download nLite 1.3.

FastStone Capture 5: beta preview of a highly-rated tool

Screengrab_105There are a few small tools that should be kept on your system and wheeled out on the odd occasion that you need to use them. A decent screen-grabbing tool is a good example. Once these tools were all commercial or shareware and you had to pay decent money to take a grab of your workspace. Now tools such as the fantastic 5-star rated Screenshot Captor 2.28.06 are free and updated regularly.

FastStone Capture 5 was recently released as a preview and is another good and free screen-grabbing tool. The new version ships with a much improved and more simplistic interface, enabling you to leave it running at all times (when you're wanting to take multiple screengrabs). You can also add effects to your grabs to make them more visually appealing. Take a look and download FastStone Capture 5 beta yourself.

Seeking a fast email client? Check out Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Logo_15 Microsoft Outlook is the default email client for many corporate users. With good reason too. It's well structured, highly-configurable, enables you to manage your diary and meeting schedule and links to an Exchange server so you can share information between users. However, it's also very slow. Due to the sheer amount of spam we receive, Outlook can take a while to start, downloading email can take up to half an hour and it is very processor intensive. Searching can be slow, too. Much of this will change with Office 2007, but that's still forthcoming for the average end-user.

For now, we certainly recommend Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9, which has just been updated with a few security fixes. Don't forget, there's also Mozilla Thunderbird 2, which has recently been released as a beta preview. Still very usable and also recommended.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 now with Windows Vista support

Logo_16 When Firefox 2 was released in October it was a much-anticipated web browser. However, there aren't too many changes or improvements over 1.5x. One of the key advantages is the inline spell checking feature which makes writing these blog entries an easy process - simply check your spelling as you type.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 is the latest update with a number of security fixes and minor enhancements. One of these new features is preliminary support for Windows Vista. There are still a few issues with full Vista support. If you want more info, look at the release notes. If you're an existing Firefox 2 user, your browser should update automatically. If you're still a 1.5x user, it might be time to download and install the new version.

Backup, store and manage your DVD collection

Screengrab_13 New PCs ship with large hard drives. Unless you work with large video files, how are you ever going to fill that 500GB hard drive? One option would be to use a virtual CD emulator such as Paragon CD-ROM Emulator 3 and store your CDs on your computer, as virtual drives. Another option would be to use the space to backup, store and access your DVDs.

AnyDVD 6.0.9.7 will enable you to grab your purchased DVDs, unscramble and then store the contents on your hard drive - for personal use only. You can then keep a backup of your favourite DVDs, watch them via your computer. Ideal if your 20¨ LCD screen is based in your bedroom. To store and manage your DVD collection, use a tool such as the superb 5-star rated MediaMan 2.65 which also enables you to track people who have borrowed your media.

Develop your web skills by coding with Aptana 0.2.7

Screengrab_104 Back in 1999 most web developers didn't use templates or a WYSIWYG editor to produce their web pages. It was all done by hand, by coding up the pages within an application such as the fantastic Homesite (which was taken over by Macromedia and elements included within Dreamweaver). However, coding your own pages is the best way to learn how to understand web code.

Aptana 0.2.7 is a fantastic web editor that enables you to create your pages, from scratch, using traditional HTML, CSS, Javascript and other scripting languages. As you code your pages, you can quickly preview your code and tweak as required. You're not coding blind either, as the assist tool and validator will help you perfect your pages.

Aptana 0.2.7 is cross-platform, so the tool you use on your work PC can be used on your Mac when you get home.

Surf more effectively with Opera 9.1

Opera2_t Whilst most of the online talk is about Firefox versus Internet Explorer, many of us completely overlook the superb Opera. This is a web browser that's produced by a commercial organisation, but is available free of charge. Highly-customisable and rather fast, it has a loyal following. Opera 9.1 has just been made available there are few excuses for not downloading and trying this web browser.

Opera 9.1 contains a number of new features and improvements. The key new feature is the addition of fraud protection that will help protect you against the rising number of phishing sites that ask you for your personal information such as your bank details.

Download the free Opera 9.1 and see how it compares to your favourite web browser.

Grab the preview/beta of Adobe Photoshop CS3

Screengrab_103 Since the announcement of the move to the Intel platform, and the launch of Intel-based Macs at the start of 2006, there are a few applications that require the move to the Intel platform. One of these applications is Adobe Photoshop, a processor-intensive tool. The wait is over, for both Intel Mac and Windows users as Adobe have released a preview/beta of Photoshop CS3, which will be released officially in Spring 2007.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 ships with a whole host of new features, but the most obvious is the improved user-interface. If you're a Mac user, you'll find it flies on your Intel machine (although isn't much faster on PPC Macs, although do remember this is still a beta). Download the latest Adobe Photoshop CS3 yourself and see if you like this new version.

Full commercial app: Sun StarOffice 7, worth £60

Boxshot_15 There are some key apps that everyone has installed on their computer. Security software is a cert, so is a web browser and an email client. Another is a commercial office suite. Most of us use Microsoft Office, as we believe that we need the compatibility. Some of us use the free OpenOffice 2.1.0 which was recently updated. However, now there's an alternative as we're giving you our best free full commercial software to date, worth £60.

Sun StarOffice 7 is a full office suite with compatibility with Microsoft Office. It ships with a document creator, a spreadsheet and presentation tool. Better still, you don't need to rely on a third-party tool to create your PDF documents, as you can do that from within StarOffice.

We thoroughly recommend Sun StarOffice 7. Worth downloading to see if it meets your office requirements. Note that due to the size of the software (161MB) our download server is a little overloaded. Be patient. Download overnight if necessary.

Daily roundup: 15th of December 2006

Screengrab_102 It's always wise to install the latest security software on your computer. This week we've seen a few new security updates, including the anti-spyware apps Spyware Terminator 1.7.0.899 and ArovaxShield 2.0.70, as well as the recent update to the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.23.

Belarc Advisor 7.2.1.8 is a superb tool for running a full audit on your system and to determine whether you have all the hardware elements you were promised by your PC manufacturer. HyperSnap 6.12.01 will enable you to screengrab your workplace, whilst USBDeview 1.01 will show current connected USB devices.

Find files quickly with Copernic Desktop Search 2

Screengrab_101One fairly recent Mac OS X innovation is the ability to find files with immediate results. Called 'Spotlight', the tool continuously builds a database of your drive contents so when you want to search for a file, enter the file name and the results and location will be displayed  without delay. Windows XP has a similar search tool, but it isn't as glossy or advanced as Spotlight.

Copernic Desktop Search 2.02 is a tool that enables you to search for files through your desktop, with immediate results. You can search through your email, web pages and many other files so that you can also fine results that are similar to the keywords you require. The latest Copernic Desktop Search 2.02 ships with a task bar search tool, so you don't need to open the complete program to perform a search.

Daily roundup: 14th of December 2006

Screengrab_12 The last few days have seen a number of key software releases and updates. If you like to chat over the Internet, check out the latest version of Windows Live Messenger 8.1.0168. Google have released a minor update to Picasa 2.6.0.35.97, which you can use to manage your digital photos. POP Peeper 3.01 will enable you to check email from multiple accounts, whilst the superb Screenshot Captor 2.28.06 is our recommended tool for taking grabs of your workspace.

Another week and another StudioLine Photo Basic 3.12.3 update. If you're seeking a program that will enable you to demonstrate your software, take a look at the latest TurboDemo 7.5. There is a second public preview (beta 2) of Paint.NET 3.0, whilst the professional coding tool UltraEdit 12.20b has received a minor refresh.

Use a custom domain with Windows Live Custom Domains Manager

Grab140_8 Microsoft Windows Live is a collection of tools that combine web storage with software you can run from your PC. For instance, the next version of Outlook Express is built on Windows Live technology, so is the Hotmail replacement (live.com) and Windows Messenger. However, Microsoft has gone further and now enables you to point your own domain to live.com rather than use a live.com or hotmail.com domain name. The point? You can use the live.com services, with your professional domain. It's all free, too.

Windows Live Custom Domains Manager 1.4 is a tool that enables you to manage your domains so you can point your company domain to the live.com servers. Any email that is sent to you@yourcompany.com is received via live.com and you can access this through your email client or via the live.com webmail service. With 2GB of free storage, you're not going to run out of space soon.

Skype 3: major official new release available

Screengrab_100After a relatively short testing period, the official version of Skype 3.0 has been released and is now available for download. If you're a Skype user, this is a must-have download. If you're not a Skype user, Skype is a chat tool that enables you to chat in the old-fashioned way via your computer keyboard or through a telephone connected to your computer. Calls through Skype are cheaper than traditional phone calls.

Skype 3 contains a number of new features. The first thing you might notice is that the interface has had a bit of a visual makeover. You can now find and enter a public chat (conference) or invite different colleagues to join you in a conversation - ideal if you need to set up a conference between people situated in different timezones.

Get in to the festive spirit with our Christmas downloads

Grab140_1 It's the time of the year where we get ourselves ready for the festive season by creating Xmas wallpaper, screensavers and by downloading games with a Christmas theme. Although it's mild outside and doesn't feel like Christmas is just over a week away, there are many new Christmas-themed downloads made available this year.

We've got a couple of great screensavers. The Christmas 3D Screensaver is a well-designed shareware screensaver that will keep your fellow office workers entertained. The Crisp Christmas Screensaver is an extended version of the popular seasonal screensaver. We've also got a couple of decent seasonal games, with the Chicken Invaders 3 (Xmas Edition) and Pinch ol' Santa 2, which is a free seasonal game for Windows or Mac users.

Play old computer games with MAME

Screengrab_99 Some of the old computer games are the best, certainly in terms of gameplay. Due to the lack of any decent graphics card, developers concentrated on gameplay, rather than the look and feel of their computer games. Therefore the games were fantastic to play and rather simplistic. However, simplistic can be better if you want a distraction from your work.

MAME 0.111 is the multiple arcade machine emulator that will enable you to emulate a number of old arcade machines or old computers. The only catch is that you need the ROM from the old machine, but they are separately available if you know where to look. Once you've found the ROM for the old arcade game, you can freely download old games and play them on your PC.

If you want to play games from the 80s and 90s, download MAME 0.111.

Permanently erase important documents with Eraser 5.81

Screengrab_98 When we want to delete important files, most of us simply drag our files to the Trashcan and then empty our trash. Finding or recovering these files is easy, as they aren't really deleted from your system. If you want to trash your hard drive, at a later date, your drive will be a hive of important personal information that you think you've deleted, but an expert can easily retrieve. You need a tool that will permanently erase the files by overwriting them with other data.

Eraser 5.81 is a small tool that will enable you to erase important files, documents and folders. It's only a small free tool, but very popular with vnunet.com users. It does one job, but does this job effectively. Download Eraser 5.81 and see if it meets your requirements.

Looking for a new email client? Try Thunderbird 2 beta 1

Logo_13 It's been a while coming, but Mozilla have finally released the first public preview version of Thunderbird 2, for Windows, Mac and Linux users. I've been using this version for the last couple of weeks, without any major issues, so it's going to be fine for the majority of clued-up Thunderbird 1.x users.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 beta 1 ships with a number of features, although few of them are very obvious. The first thing you may notice is that the interface has received a minor revamp. The filtering system has seen a few improvements and there are many other minor features. Others will be enhanced closer to the final release. For a list of the new features, check out the release notes.

If you're a new Mozilla Thunderbird user, we suggest you wait for the release candidate. If you're an existing user, it might be worth checking out the new release.

Maintain your computer with System Mechanic 7

Grab140_7 Modern PCs rarely go wrong and if they do go wrong, it's generally software related. However, we don't always think about system recovery or pro-actively analysing our system for problems, until the problem occurs. We then struggle to create a system restore disc if our system doesn't boot at all.

System Mechanic 7 Professional is the latest all-in-one system maintenance tools. The professional edition contains all the diagnostic tools within the standard edition, so you can look for faults before they occur. However, it also contains advanced security tools and Search and Recover, so you can locate lost or accidentally deleted files.

If you're seeking a system maintenance suite, take a look at System Mechanic 7 Professional.

Preview and display your digital photos on your desktop

Grab140 Digital photography enables to capture a particular moment, but many of us don't really do much more than simply print our photos on standard printer paper. You could turn them in to desktop wallpaper, but that might be overkill. Another option is to display photos, randomly on your desktop, so you can be inspired by your photos.

Roxio MediaTicker 2.0 is a tool that will enable you to show your digital photos (and other images) in a ticker format at the bottom of your screen. You can choose to show random photos or select a complete folder from within 'My Pictures'. The latest Roxio MediaTicker 2.0 will enable you to show news and other information within your ticker.

Replace Office with the latest version of OpenOffice 2.1

Grab140_6How many of us use Microsoft Office or another commercial office application, yet only write simple documents or produce basic calculations, through the spreadsheet? Do you use a commercial office application purely on the basis that you worry about compatibility issues? Generally there are fewer issues that you'd expect, primarily on the basis that most of us only use the basic features within our office apps.

OpenOffice 2.1 is a free alternative that ships with a document editor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentation application (Impress), amongst other modules. It's also updated regularly and will enable you to open and save Microsoft Office compatible documents. You can open a Word document within OpenOffice Writer. Download and see for yourself.

Avanquest UK & VNU Christmas Advent Calendar

Screengrab_97 Christmas is a time where we should offer care and forgiveness. Don't forget the presents, too! Avanquest UK have teamed up with us, vnunet.com, to offer readers various free downloads, promotions and money-off vouchers as part of their seasonal Christmas advent calendar. Simply visit the advent calendar each day, leading up to Christmas Day, in order to reveal the latest free download, offer or promotion. There's a different offer each day.

Yes, we're half-way through the advent season, but you're still able to take advantage of previous promotions since 1st of December. For instance, you could download a free full commercial version of Sun StarOffice 7, worth £60, which is being provided by vnunet.com, in association with Avanquest. Check out the advent calendar for yourself.

Live on the edge? Give Firefox 3 alpha 1 a try

Logo_6 We've been promised that Mozilla Firefox 3.0 will be more of a jump from the current Firefox 2.0 than the previous v1.5 release. For instance, Firefox 2.0 contained new features based around the current web engine. Sure, features like inline form spell-checking are useful, but they don't add much to the overall web experience.

With Mozilla Firefox 3.0 alpha 1, you're going to get an improved rendering engine, built on the Gecko 1.9 engine. In addition to that, the new Cairo web image 'painting' system will improve how images appear on your browser, whatever computer you're using to browse the web. Note that this is the first public preview of Firefox 3.0, dubbed “Gran Paradiso”. It should only be used within a virtual environment and not alongside an existing Firefox 2.x setup.

Get more from your printer with FinePrint 5.6

Screengrab_96 Your standard printer driver only has a number of the usual functions. Print landscape, portrait, use a higher DPI setting for better quality paper and so on. If you want to do more with your printer, you'll need to find an application that has it's own print management system. For instance, if you want to create your own photo album, you'll need an application that supports this feature.

FinePrint 5.6 is a tool that enhances your current print management system. For instance, if you want a letterhead system, but do not want to print letterheaded paper, you can set up FinePrint to add this feature to the top of every document your print. You can add watermarks to your printed documents, an additional footer and much more.

If you want to get more from your printer, try FinePrint 5.6.

Speed up PDF document viewing with Adobe Reader SpeedUp

Screengrab_95 Adobe Acrobat is a fantastic workhorse for creating PDF documents for both web and commercial printing. We don't mind waiting for Acrobat to start up if we need to spend time compiling or editing a PDF document. However, we don't want to have to wait for Adobe Reader to launch slowly, each time we want to view a PDF document. With some of the Acrobat technologies appearing in the latest Adobe Reader, opening PDF documents can be a long-winded process.

Adobe Reader StartUp 1.36 is software that removes some of the unnecessary startup features from Adobe Reader. This includes plugins, extensions and some of additional fonts that are loaded in to memory when you open your first PDF document. Of course, if you need these plugins and other features, at a later date, you can always go back to your original configuration.

Download Adobe Reader StartUp 1.36 and see if it makes a difference on your computer. Alternatively, give Foxit PDF Reader 2 or even JAWS PDF Editor 3.5 a try as they can both open PDF documents, quickly.

Turn an old PC or Mac in to a personal web server

Screengrab_94 Fast broadband enables us to do many new things with our computer. As well as download large files, quickly, or playing online games more effectively, we also have the facility to upload content and to get large files on to the Internet. With many of us having old PCs or Macs lying around doing nothing, why not turn these computers in to a personal web server and host your own website, at home?

Abyss Web Server X1 will enable you to do that. It's cross-platform, so the same web technology applies whether you're using a Windows or Mac. A web server enables you to setup a website or enables you to provide downloads via http. Better still, you can make these pages password-protected, if you want to supply photos or files to only your family and friends.

If you've always wanted to set up your own web server, take a look at Abyss Web Server X1.

Edit and improve your audio files with Audacity 1.2.6

Screengrab_93 Most of us obtain our audio files legitimately through importing audio from our CD collection or purchasing music for download from the Internet. However, there are loads old tracks that are not available on CD or online. These are either live tracks or old mixes that shipped on vinyl. You could import the audio in to your computer, but then you'll need an audio editor to cut and enhance the file.

Audacity 1.2.6 is a free opensource audio editor that's been around for ages. It's tried and tested technology and will enable you to open an audio file that you've imported in to your computer and then touch-up and export. If you wanted to edit a live audio file, you could cut to size and then fade in and out the audience at the start/end of the track. You can also edit your MP3 audio files.

If you're seeking an audio editor, download Audacity 1.2.6.

Produce an archive for distribution, with WinRar 3

Screengrab_92 ZIP technology has become the industry standard as it's supported within both Windows and Mac OS X, with the basic feature-set available to third-party developers so that they can incorporate the technology within freeware ZIP management application such as 7-ZIP or ZipGenius. However, as the ubiquitous MP3 format as proved, the most popular format isn't always the best available.

WinRar 3.62 enables you to produce archives within the RAR compression format. This does have some advantages over ZIP, in that you can maximise your compression, produce bigger archives and cut your archive across multiple volumes, if you need to move an archive to another computer. WinRar 3.62 isn't free technology, but it does have a loyal following. It will also manage archives compressed with ZIP or other technology.

Full commercial app: Paragon CD-ROM Emulator 3, worth £16

Grab140_5 Applications are becoming larger, often shipping on DVD. Unless you want to keep accessing the application resources, you'll need to get these on to your hard drive. One way of doing this is through a CD-ROM Emulator package that will enable you to setup a virtual CD. You can then copy the contents of a CD to this virtual CD, on your system, and the next time you need to access the application DVD, you can point it to the virtual CD instead.

This is also ideal for gamers. Instead of having to insert the game CD every time you want to play a game, you could simply create a virtual CD of the disc contents and then point your PC to this virtual CD. Games will look far quicker than they would from a standard CD.

If you want to create virtual CDs on your computer, we've got Paragon CD-ROM Emulator v3, a full commercial download worth £16.

Full commercial app: Backup4All 3.3 Lite, worth £15

Grab140_4 External hard drives are highly affordable and portable. These drives could be used to backup the contents of your internal PC drive. For instance, if you purchase most of your music online, the last thing you'll want to do is lose your digital music. There's no easy way of re-downloading music obtained through iTunes Music Store, for a second time.

You'll need a backup application that will enable you to backup (and restore) individual files and folders. We've got the full commercial download of Backup4All 3.3 Lite, worth £15, which is an ideal tool for backing up your key files. As backing up can be a chore, Backup4All ships with a backup wizard so you can quickly setup a planned backup. Backup4All also ships with a number configuration options so you can quickly backup your 'My Documents' or similar folders.
