View news and blogs through GreatNews

Screengrab_134 What do we use the Internet for, exactly? One of the key uses is to extract the latest news and information, either through news pages or by following a blog. However, there are so many news pages and blogs, it's hard to keep up. One answer is to use a RSS news reader that will enable you to subscribe to your favourite news sites and blogs and then browse the headlines, when required.

GreatNews 1.0 build 379 is a fantastic freeware news reader. Subscribe to your favourite news and blogs and keep up to date. It will also allow you to read the news within GreatNews, so if you want to read more than just the headline, click the headline and you'll find the news page appears within the application, so you don't need to worry about opening a web browser.

Manage and edit your ISO images with UltraISO

Screengrab_133 Most Linux distributions are supplied as an ISO image, and for good reason. An ISO image is effectively a 1:1 copy of a CD and it enables you to burn the ISO image to a CD-R, with the software supplier assured that the end-user will receive a CD as supplied. However, there's no reason why you can't create your own ISO images if you need to distribute files across the Internet. For instance, if you create your own fancy slideshow of your vacation, don't send the slideshow, create an auto-booting CD and then supply your friends and family with the ISO image, which they can burn to their own CD.

UltraISO 8.6.1 is a tool that enables you to manage, create and edit ISO images. It's purely designed for this purpose. For instance, you could import an ISO image and then add or remove files, package it back up as an ISO and then re-supply. If you only want to extract certain files from a supplied ISO, it saves you from burning the contents to CD.

Convert from one image format to another with XnView

Screengrab_132 There are a wide range of commercial and free image and photo viewers. Indeed, if you want a simple viewer, you an simply use the Windows Explorer image viewer to view an image, on your desktop. Converting the image to another format is a lot more difficult. If you have a range of images supplied in a TIF format, you might want to quickly convert to JPEG for your website.

XnView 1.90 is a powerful image converter that will enable you to convert images from one format to another, quickly. You can batch convert a range of images. You can also edit, rotate or fix your photos, before you run them through the format conversion. Better still, XnView is a cross-platform tool, so you can use the same application on your Windows, Mac and Linux machine.

Daily roundup: new version of GIMP and much more

Screengrab_131 We often have to use Internet Explorer, although we don't always use this as our favourite browser. If this is the case, install the new version of IE Tab 1.3.1 for Firefox, which will enable you to use Internet Explorer, through a tab window, within Firefox. If you want to view your web pages offline, you could try Offline Explorer 4.6 which will download an entire site to your drive. If you're interested in editing the code that drives the pages, take a look at the latest version of TwistPad 1.56.

The GIMP 2.2.14 is a popular paint and image editing application, with Paint.NET 3 another option.  Rocket Dock 1.3 will enable you to use your own Mac OS X style dock on Windows. USBDeview 1.03 will enable you to show and manage connected USB devices, whereas nCleaner 2.2 will cleanse your drive from temporary files. Cobian Backup 8.2 will enable you to backup your drive contents and vLite 0.9 beta will customise your Windows Vista install CD.

Manage your media collection with MediaMan

Screengrab_130 We all have a fairly extensive DVD, CD and digital audio collection, but most of our media isn't categorised or catalogued. We simply stack them on the shelves, generally in the order they've been purchased. If we lend a DVD to a friend, we don't always keep track of the DVDs on our shelves and those that have been borrowed.

MediaMan 2.66 is a fantastic media management tool. It enables you to scan in the barcodes from your DVDs, videos, books and CDs and then store the information in a catalogue. It works with Amazon, so the artwork and information for each product will be extracted from the Amazon website.

Store interesting web pages with ScrapBook

Grab140_25 The Internet could be regarded as one large newspaper. We browse the web for our favourite news, discussion pages and blogs and print the information we require. This is a waste of resources. Another alternative would be to store the pages offline, on your computer. This would enable you to quickly revert to pages or snippets of information you've found, but not had chance to read through properly.

ScrapBook 1.1 is a Firefox extension that enables you to store pages, news and snippets of information that you find interesting, when you surf the web. The information is stored until you want to remove it from Firefox and, as it will work offline, you don't even need to go back on to the net to access the stored page. Ideal for users who have limited net access via their laptop. Download ScrapBook 1.1 and see if it enhances your Firefox browsing experience.

Completely remove installed apps with Your Uninstaller

Screengrab_129 When we install applications on our system, files are located in some obscure locations and entries written to our Registry. When we use the standard Windows Add/Remove programs tool, these applications aren't completely removed from our computer. The main files are deleted, but libraries, some Registry keys and other files remain.

Your Uninstaller 2006 is a tool that specialises in removing the files that were installed with a software application, including the Registry keys. However, this tool does much more than that. It will also remove programs that start with your computer, cleanse your PC with the temporary files that reside on your system and will even uninstall screen savers and much more. There are plenty of other similar tools available, some that are free of charge. However, download Your Uninstaller 2006 and see if it meets your requirements.

Try a different email client: Thunderbird 2 beta 2

Screengrab_128 When we're used to using a particular email client, we find it hard to move across to another. If you're like the majority, you'll probably have more than one POP3 account and have forgotten your password or the relevant account info. Worse, the new email client may not properly import your old email, so you can't move across your old data.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2 beta 2 is the second preview of the forthcoming major email client from Mozilla, the same people behind Firefox. It's a powerful email client and the new version ships with a host of new features. You can find out about the new features by reading the current Release Notes. You can also import email from another email client and it's cross-platform, so you can use the same email client on your Windows, Mac and Linux machine.

Check whether your PC can handle Windows Vista

Screengrab_127 Windows Vista is due at the end of January and has some new features that require a powerful PC. For instance, the fantastic new Aero theme requires a fairly hefty graphics card. Mind you, that's all you might need. You might be surprised. To get the best from Vista, your PC might only need a better graphics card and some more memory - a cost that may be under £100. Far cheaper than having to purchase a brand new computer.

Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a tool that will examine your computer and see how relevant it is to run Vista. It will also advise on the version of Vista most relevant to you, based on your current specification. You can then choose whether you want to upgrade your PC so you can take advantage of the additional features within Vista Ultimate.

Sync your Opera bookmarks using oSync

Screengrab_126 Although most of us still use Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera provide excellent alternatives. Opera is well-designed, fast and, best of all, free. Once you get started with the browser, you won't want to go back to Internet Explorer and you're likely to install Opera across your various computers, at work and home. Fantastic, but how do you share your bookmarks across these computers?

oSync 0.7.1 is a Opera bookmarks synchronisation tool that will enable you to store a bookmark on your work PC and then automatically migrate the updated bookmarks to Opera, installed on your home PC. This is a seamless procedure so you don't need to do anything manually, everything is done in the background. If you're a Firefox user, there's an even better synchronisation tool from Google.

Manage your file archives using IZArc

Grab140_24 Only a few years ago, most archive managers were designed to handle a particular kind of archive. Stuffit primarily managed the Mac .SIT format, WinZip was designed for ZIP archives and WinRAR specialised in managing RAR files. Fantastic tools, but how many of us want a different archive manager to handle multiple archives? We want a tool that's going to handle more than one archive, including all the most popular formats.

IZArc 3.7 is an archive manager that remains independent. It will handle the majority of the standard file archives and has an easy-to-use user interface. It will also manage other files such as CD image files (ISO images), so if you've been given an ISO CD image, you don't need to burn it to CD, you can simply extract the contents to your desktop.

View your Outlook 'to do' and task items on your desktop

Screengrab_125 Outlook is a fairly decent tool for organising your meetings, tasks and 'to do' items. You can share and invite other users and track your forthcoming events, by arranging reminders that will make sure you do not forget your meeting. However, the primary use of Outlook is to handle your email and we don't always refer to the calendar option. What would be more useful if there was a tool that previewed our 'to do' items on our desktop, so we didn't need to keep referring to Outlook.

DeskTask 1.0 SR1 is a tool that will extract this information from Outlook and will show your tasks and 'to do' items via your desktop. You can lock this in place, so you don't accidentally move it around or make it fairly transparent, so the 'to do' items aren't always in your face when you're trying to work.

Remind yourself of up-and-coming tasks with Stickies

Grab140 It's easy to use paper to write down our forthcoming tasks and contact details, but these can easily get lost on our work computer. The cleaners come in after hours, attempt to clean your computer and accidentally knock a few sticky notes on the floor. They might be lost forever. A better option would be to use your system to store your notes and post these details on your desktop screen, then shut off your PC at the end of every working day.

Stickies 6 is a simple tool that enables you to add sticky notes to your desktop screen. You can customise the colour, the font and keep your notes customised so that you have one sticky for your meetings and another for what you need to do at home. Better still, they don't need to just reside on your work computer. If you remember a task, you can transfer the note to another user or another computer. You can also set alarms to remind you of a forthcoming important date.

Remove rogue security apps with RogueRemover

Screengrab_124 We're always looking for the best possible security software. Our ideal application will be well designed, lightweight so it uses minimum system resources, but also effectively searches for and removes all known virus, Trojan and malicious software. As we're never entirely happy with our current security tool, we keep on searching for and installing new apps. However, how do you always know that the security application is actually a valid tool? It might search through your system and state that no malicious software was found, but whilst it's performing the search, it's actually installing its own Trojan.

RogueRemover 1.11 is a tool that's designed to route out and find rogue security applications that you might have installed on your system. It's completely free, so might be a decent acquisition to your software resources.

Design your own professional software box

Screengrab_24 These days there's a fine line between shareware and commercial software. What defines commercial software if you can purchase both on the Internet? The clear difference between the two is that commercial software often ships in a box and is available through retail. However, shareware authors can give the impression that their software is available commercially by designing a box image.

True BoxShot 1.6 is a tool that will enable you to create your own 3D box image from either a plain 2D image or from a collection of images, logos and other graphics. It's that easy. If you have your own logo and a stock photo, you're more than half way to creating your own box. This 5-star rated product is worth the small investment if you're going to create one or more box images.

Manage your projects using ConceptDraw Project 3

Screengrab_123 When we're given the task of managing a project, we often forget that we need to sort out a start date, make sure the raw materials are in place to complete the various tasks, assign the relevant people needed to work on the project and then manage every stage so that it is completed on time. If it doesn't complete on time, it might cost our employer additional revenue.

ConceptDraw Project 3 is a cross-platform project management tool that enables you to manage your projects from initiation through to completion. It's both Mac and PC compatible, so you can share your project between operating systems if necessary. It's also fairly easy to use, so if you've never managed a large-scale project, it shouldn't take too long to get started.

Create a panoramic image from a collection of photos

Screengrab_122 When we travel on holiday, we take our digital camera with us and take photos of just about everything, attempting to capture the feelings we experienced. We get home and load the photos in to our computer and realise that it's difficult to show off the various buildings and landscapes with standard 4:3 photos. One answer is to to take a few photos and then stitch them together, creating a panoramic wide photo.

WPanorama 7.0.1 is a tool that is designed to turn a collection of photos in to a wide panoramic image. You can't just stitch any old image. They need to be photos that were take adjacent to each other so objects within the photos are shared. You can also export your panoramic image as a small video, which will further enhance your experience.

Produce your own 3D graphics using the free Blender

Blender140 Not long ago you had to have specialist skills to produce any kind of 3D graphics content. To be fair, you still do, but with some of the older apps available free of charge, there's no reason why you can't experiment with the software and see if you can produce your own 3D objects. This could be a useful skill within your portfolio if you want to draft and design your own home extension, a loft conversion, a new garage or similar. If you can produce a visual design and give it to your architect, they'll find it much easier to interpret your thoughts.

Bender 2.43 RC2 is a free 3D design tool that used to be available on a commercial basis. It's a powerful application and probably overkill for the novice designer. However, if you've got some basic design skills and want to move in to 3D design, it might be worth investigating. Of course, if you find the tool over the top, you could always investigate Ulead's Cool 3D or Xara 3D.

Sort out problematic startup apps with Autoruns

Autoruns140 When we install software on our computer, the installer leaves files all over your hard drive. Often files are included within our Registry so they start when we boot our computer. This slows the boot up procedure and can also affect your machine if a startup application isn't removed from your Registry when you uninstall the software (as your computer will attempt to launch the application and fail to find its location).

Autoruns 8.6 is a tool that can be used to see what applications, tools, libraries and other software is launched when you boot your PC. If you experience problems with your computer when you start your machine, you can use this tool to diagnose the problem. For instance, you can choose to disable tools that startup with your computer or remove them completely. You can change the order in the way they start, in case you need to start one application before another will start properly.

Setup your own internal email server with MDaemon

Mdaemon140 Setting up your own home network is relatively easy. Many of us have more than one computer in our home, with a PC in the sitting room, in the kids room and our laptop, in the study. Why don't you use one email domain such as yourname.co.uk and then route your email through your own network? You can then manage how you access your own email (internally or remotely), how spam is filtered and you can setup multiple mailboxes for each family member.

MDaemon 9.5.4 is an advanced email server that, in its basic form, will support up to 6 users. Easily enough for a small business, a department or even your home network. You can use MDaemon to handle all your incoming email. When someone within your network tries to download their email, it's already on your server, so they're only retrieving it locally.

Create your own Skype answer-machine using KiskKish SAM

Grab140_23 Skype is a fantastic tool for chatting or communicating over the Internet. With fast broadband, you can make almost free phone calls to other Skype users. You can also use the traditional method, by writing messages through the builtin chat tool, much like MSN Messenger or similar. However, what happens if someone tries to call you and you're away from your computer? Not particular professional.

KishKish SAM 4.0.0.7 is a tool that provides an answer-machine services for Skype 3 users (not that the latest KishKish SAM 4 only works with Skype 3). The free version only provides you with a very basic answer-machine services. The professional and other editions will enable you to record conference calls, which could be useful if you've setup a Skype based meeting.

Use your webcam for security purposes, across the web

Grab140_22During the day, sitting in the office, our flat or house remains unguarded. Many flat owners do not have a burglar alarm and are easy targets. Why not put your webcam to use and use it as a security device to record activity within your apartment? Using a motion detector would enable you to turn on the camera when and if someone enters your flat. It's worked - there was someone on the news recently who recorded someone breaking in to his flat when he was away on holiday.

webcamXP 2007 is a tool that you can use to setup and use one or more webcams for monitoring your home and streaming the contents ov er the Internet. If you've got an Intel-based iMac, you could use this with the almost-hidden builtin webcam to secretly record activity. Even if someone steals the computer, the webcam content has been stored and uploaded to the Internet.

Backup or restore your drive with Paragon Drive Backup 8.5

Grab140_21 If we need to backup our drive, most of us simply back up the files we need most. That's fine if you only want to backup your important key data, but we forget that we often have important fonts and other system files that we've installed over the last few months or years. These don't get backed up if you just back up certain files and folders.

Paragon Drive Backip 8.5, which is now Windows Vista compatible, will enable you to backup your entire drive. Once you've backed up the drive, each time you back up your drive in the future, Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 will use differential technology which will only back up the data that you've altered since you last ran a back up schedule.

Translate words on the fly with Babylon 6

Screengrab_121 Blogs and particularly news-related blogs are becoming more popular. However, some of these blogs aren't always written in English and many of us are still interested in the information. Does the blog tell us about a new product launch? If so, we want to know the answers as soon as possible. If we're surfing eBay, some of the foreign items are written-up in their local language, so it would be useful to be able to translate the text.

Babylon 6 integrates within your web browser to enable you to quickly select the words you want to translate. It supports 17 languages and will also work to translate emails and any other document. It's always useful to have a translation tool on your PC, so download Babylon 6 and see if it works well for yourself.

Cleanse & maintain your computer with nCleaner 2.1

Screengrab_120 After browsing the web, downloading software, installing apps on your computer, you might not realise but your hard drive is bursting at the seams with temporary files. More often than not, these temporary files stay on your computer until you remove them. They're also there for anyone to see, so if someone has access to your user account, they can see the sites you've been browsing and the software you've been installing.

nCleaner 2.1 is a free system cleansing tool that will free up junk from your drive, temporary files, your Registry and more. It has support for web applications, including chat clients, so it will automatically look for temporary files you've received during a chat session and then delete these from your computer.

Speed up your computer by defragging your drive

Screengrab_119 We're always looking to speed up our computer, but most of us turn to new hardware to make the difference. Perhaps an upgraded graphics card would make the difference? Will a faster hard drive make a difference to our system? Well, yes, but you can speed up your computer for free, using software enhancements. For instance, cleansing your Registry or defragging your hard drive.

IObit SmartDefrag 2.01 is a free disk defragmentation tool that will enable you to reallocate the contents of your hard drive in to one continuous block. This means your computer doesn't need to take so long to find software located on your drive. There are other free disk defragmentation tools, such as the recently updated Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.1.2.

Full commercial app: O&O SafeErase 1

Grab140_20Your trashcan enables you to quickly move files for deletion, either immediately or at a later date. However, these files aren't completely eliminated and you (or anyone else) can use a tool to salvage files that have been deleted through emptying your trash. Even files that have been deleted months ago are often recoverable by file salvage software.

O&O SafeErase v1 is a full commercial download, worth £14, and will enable you to safely and securely delete files from your hard drive. It works by overwriting the existing file multiple times, so file salvaging software can't recover the file. There are different security levels and the higher the level, the less likely anything can be recovered, but the actual file elimination can take longer to process.

Download O&O SafeErase v1.

Daily roundup: a fair selection of new software to download

Screengrab_118 Quite a day for new and updated software. ZoneAlarm 7 has been released and we've got the full free basic version for you to download. There's a new version of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP SP2 users. Skype 3 has had a minor update, with a few new fixes.

There are a few new security releases. The popular Spyware Terminator 1.8 has just been updated, SUPERAntiSpyware 3.5.1016 will protect against malicious software and if you're seeking another personal firewall, check out Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.21. If you want to use your PC as a media centre, take a look at the free GB-PVR 0.99.5, whilst the popular defragmentation tool Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.1.2 has also had a minor refresh. There are also minor updates to OrangeCD Suite 6.0.8 and Vallen Jpegger 4.92.

The worlds best free firewall? ZoneAlarm 7 available

Grab140_19 Everyone should use a firewall, indeed there's no reason why you can't use a hardware-based firewall on your modem and then a software firewall on your PC. There are a wide number of free and commercial firewalls available, including the popular ZoneAlarm.

ZoneAlarm 7 has just been released and the free basic version is available to download. The new version has an updated firewall 'engine' that will look for and eliminate malware from your computer. It has a new auto-learn feature so it keeps ahead of new threats and general improved protection against external attack. Of course, this download is the free basic version and there is a Professional and Internet Security Suite version available.

Download ZoneAlarm 7.

Enhance your vision using Magnifying Glass Pro

Screengrab_117 Browsing the web can be tricky if you're visually impaired. There are things you can to help, such as enlargen the fonts on a particular page or zoom in to images with Internet Explorer. However, pages that use Flash or fixed fonts make it tricky to enlargen fonts. The other option is to use a tool such as a magnifying glass to zoom in to areas of your web page.

Magnifying Glass Pro is a tool that enables you to do just this. It works in the same way as a loupe tool within a professional photography suite. You get a magnifying glass that you can zoom over areas of a your desktop to magnify the area. This tool is useful for a fonts which are too small to read - especially fonts used for terms and conditions on web pages.

Manage your downloads with Internet Download Manager 5

Screengrab_116Although most of us use broadband in the UK, there are still ways you can accelerate and manage your downloads. By utilising a download manager, you can attempt to resume downloads, accelerate the speed that downloads arrive on your computer (by taking advantage of multiple download locations) and you can quickly re-download software that you've deleted from your computer. There are downsides too such as FTP sites that do not allow you to connect more than once - that can affect your download manager and stop you downloading files.

Internet Download Manager 5.07 is one of many available download tools that will enable you to manage your software. It's not free, and there are plenty of freeware alternatives available, but is worth downloading to see if meets your requirements.

Connect, control and manage a remote PC

Grab140_18 There are a number of tools within Windows XP that are somewhat under-utilised. One of them is Remote Desktop Connection, which enables you to connect to a remote PC and both control and manage that PC. If you have a very fast broadband connection, you might find you're able to connect and work on that remote machine. Ideal if you're situated outside of the office and forgot to bring some work documents with you.

Remote Desktop Connection 6 is the latest release from Microsoft and designed for Windows XP SP 2 users (as it ships with Vista as standard). For the average user, the new features include support for a 32-bit desktop (and you'll need a very fast connection to handle this or simply a local network) and font smoothing on the remote computer.

Try an alternative image editor by downloading PhotoFiltre

Grab140_17 If you simply want to touch-up a photo, cut a section from an image or simply convert to another format, loading and waiting for the 'big' image editors, such as Adobe Photoshop, could be overkill. These tools start loading various plugins, addons and other tools before you can even start to edit your image. The ideal solution would be a lightweight, free image and photo editor that would enable you to do the basics, then quit the application.

PhotoFiltre 6.2.7 is one such tool and will enable you to do the basics, fast. It's presented in a professional user-interface and is relatively easy to use. It ships with all the standard image and photo editing basics, as well as enabling you to add other functionality through the extensive plugin feature. There are various plugins available to download.

Create a customised Windows Vista install disc

Grab140_16 Although it's not available to the general public, tools for tweaking and enhancing Windows Vista are being released. Windows XP was shipped to OEM PC manufacturers with a customisable install CD, so OEM manufacturers can add their own logo, localisation and configure the CD so that it installs with the minimum of fuss for the end-user.

vLite 0.8 is a beta version of a tool designed to enable you to configure your own Windows Vista installation disc. Not only can you cut out the features you do not want to be installed on your system, you can add any security released, addons and other modules that you want to slipstream in to you installation. This is useful if you regularly re-install Windows on your computer and you want an install CD that enables you to do this as quickly as possible. Download and try vLite 0.8.

Store, share and take your bookmarks with you

Screengrab_115 Most of use the same browser whether we use the web at work or at home, but it's not always easy to make sure our bookmarks are synchronised between these browsers. For instance, if you add a bookmark to Opera at home, you'll want to access the same bookmark at work. You could always email yourself with your new bookmarks, but this is a long-winded process.

Portable Bookmarks 1.0 enables you to store bookmarks on a portable device (such as a USB stick) and then use them on another computer, whatever the browser. You can use one central interface to manage your bookmarks. Portable Bookmarks 1.0 is a good tool, but probably should be freeware. Alternatives are available, including the fantastic Google Browsersync for Firefox, which will sync your Firefox bookmarks, whatever operating system you're using.

Burn CDs for free using FinalBurner

Grab140_15 Although the free disc burning tools you receive with your new PC enable you to many things with your disc burner, they are often a little cumbersome and full of options you don't really require to simply burn audio or data CDs. If you just want to burn a disc quickly, one of the many free alternatives might be a better option.

FinalBurner 1.10 is a free tool that enables you to do the basic disc burning, quickly. You can also work with ISO images which are often supplied when you obtain a Linux distribution. If you want to share files, you can save your disc as an ISO image rather than zipping your files. FinalBurner has promise, but the interface isn't brilliant. You could also take a look at the free commercial Ashampoo Burning Studio 5.

Free locked files by using Unlocker

Grab140_14 When you work with multiple files, with different applications, those files can easily become locked within your operating system. For instance, if you've edited an image within an image editor, part of that application may be loaded in to memory, so even if you close the application, files you've opened can still be locked. You can't then move the file(s) to another location on your computer.

Unlocker 1.8.5 is a simple tool that enables you to unlock files that are locked on your system. Whatever the situation, you shouldn't now need to reboot or shutdown you computer to free your files, you simply use Unlocker to free up the resources attached to them. Unlocker 1.8.5 resides within your right mouse button system menu so you only need to right-click on a file to unlock.

Try a different office suite by using ThinkFree Desktop

Grab140_13 There are a few alternative office suites available and probably the most popular is the free OpenOffice suite, which is a cross-platform Microsoft Office compatible suite of software. You can open Word documents within the OpenOffice 'writer' application. However, there are other options too. For instance, Corel Wordperfect is a good popular alternative, whilst Ability Office is another.

ThinkFree Desktop 3.2 is a offline desktop office-compatible suite that will also enable you to open Word and Excel documents. It's another cross-platform office suite, so the suite you use on your PC will look the same on your Mac, and vice-versa. This makes it an easy office suite to get used to, across different operating systems. It's not free, but it's fairly low-cost and there's also an online version you can use if you have a fast broadband connection.

Be more secure with the Norton Internet Security 2007 Add-on

Grab140_12 Love or hate it, Norton Internet Security 2007 is a popular product. It's a complete security suite offering you most of the security requirements to browse the Internet and stay safe and secure. You get a desktop firewall, protection against malware, Trojans and virus attack and also spyware prevention. However, there are still more functions that could be included, especially parental control.

The Norton Internet Security 2007 Add-on is a combination of a few new modules for registered Internet Security 2007 users. It ships with an anti-spam module to prevent spam reaching your inbox. Also included are parental control features to prevent your kids from accessing messenger without your permission or at certain times of the day (ie when you're asleep). You also get confidential information blockers to prevent your info from appearing on the web, without permission.

If you're an Norton Internet Security 2007 user, we recommend you download this add-on.

Open PDF documents more quickly with Foxit PDF Reader 2

Grab140_11 PDF documents can be huge if they're embedded with print-quality images and the PDF document is designed for commercial printing. Although Adobe Reader 8 is faster than previous versions, it can still take a while to open...and that's before you open your PDF document.

Foxit PDF Reader 2 is a standalone and free PDF document reader. It's small, too, so opens up almost immediately. With the new Foxit PDF Reader 2, included are more advanced tools for filling out PDF based forms that ship with PDF documents. Javascript support is included, so if your PDF document is populated with code to validate the forms, this is supported within the new PDF reader.

Check your new PC using Belarc Advisor

Grab140_10 Mostly the PC we order on the Internet or from a magazine advert is the machine specified. Things can go wrong, however. You might have specified a custom-ordered 256MB-based graphics card, but the installers included the standard 128MB card instead. How do you know which card you've received? One option is to run a system analysis tool to check the components shipped with your computer.

Belarc Advisor 7.2.1.9 is one option. It's a tool you can run to check the components installed on your machine and the software that came pre-configured with the PC. You can run a full audit and if you believe your PC differs from the one you ordered, you can print off this audit and present it to your PC manufacturer.

There are other tools. Apart from Belarc Advisor 7.2.1.9, you could try SiSoft SANDRA X1 or Fresh Diagnose 7.50.
