The DOS 'subst' command has been around for ages and enables you to turn a folder in to a virtual drive. For instance, if you're testing software or plan to burn some files to a disc, you could turn a folder such as E:\Your PC\January\Projects\Day One in to a drive letter, such as X:. You can then access the files in this folder via the drive letter and any files stored in the folder will act as if they're based in a root directory.
You can do this manually, of course, via the Command tool. Another option is to use a tool such as Virtual Drive Creator 2.1.4, which will do this all automatically. Just choose the folder you want to turn in to a drive letter. You can do more, too, such as copy a CD to a folder on your hard drive and then assign a drive letter to this folder.
