Edit your photos or images using Paint.NET 3

Grab140_36 There are plenty of free photo views and basic manipulation tools on the market. There are few fully-fledged photo editors. The Gimp is one, Xara XS is another free tool. These applications enable you to touch-up your photos, edit images and convert between formats, free of charge. Of course, there's a basic paint tool included within the Windows, although it's not an advanced application.

Paint.NET 3 was originally designed as a replacement for the paint tool, that ships with Windows. This photo and image is updated regularly and is Vista compatible. The latest v3 ships with a number of new features, such as tab-based user interface, an interactive gradient tool and a user-definable colour palette. Download Paint.NET 3 and see if it meets your requirements.

Chat over the Internet using Gizmo Project 3

Grab140_35 Skype isn't the only tool that will enable you to chat to other users, using your computer as a phone, over the Internet. The Gizmo Project is a rival product that will enable you to chat traditionally (traditionally being through the keyboard, directly to another Gizmo user) or use broadband to chat over the Internet, cheaply.

Gizmo Project 3 has now been released and contains a number of additional features. For instance, you're able to  swap files with other Gizmo users (note that they need to be using Gizmo Project 3) and you can start a conference chat with more than one other user. Currently Gizmo Project 3 is only available for Windows users, as the Mac and Linux versions are still on a previous revision.

Collect notes and ideas using WordPerfect Lightning

Grab140_34 Whether you dream or think of ideas during office hours, the problem is remembering and taking notes of our ideas and thoughts. Although we all think we have good memories, keeping track of our ideas isn't always easy.

Corel WordPerfect Lightning is a tool that will enable you to collect information, notes, documents and share these with other users. It's a slightly confusing application as it seems to promoted as a standalone application, but it works more effectively in combination with WordPerfect Office X3. For instance, you can't write a document, only a note, without Office X3 installed. Still, it's a completely free product during beta-testing stage, so might be worth evaluating.

Customise your system clock with Clock Tray Skins

Screengrab_31 Your clock resides within your System Tray fairly innocuously. It's easy to refer to this clock for the correct time as you can set your system clock against Internet time, so it is continuously updated. However, it always appears the same. If you're one of the many who like to customise their system, you are now able to customise your system clock.

Clock Tray Skins 3.76 is a tool that enables you to skin your system clock. Apart from changing the visuals, it does much more than just show the current time. You can show the day of the week and the current date. No more having to hold your mouse over the clock to find out the current day/date.

Use your webcam as a security device with Active WebCam

Grab140_33 Buying a webcam made a lot of sense at the time, but how many of you really use it for chatting over the Internet? One option would be to use the camera to record video taken from your camera, for security purposes. If you use the right software, you can set up motion detection so that the camera starts recording as soon as it picks up motion within the room.

Active WebCam 8.3 is advanced web camera software that enables you to use your camera to record video to your computer. You can upload the recorded video (or grabs from the video) to a remote website, enabling you to have a realtime preview of recorded video. Set it up so it only records video when it detects motion and you could be notified when you're away on holiday.

View the weather forecast from Firefox

Screengrab_30Someone once laughed when I mentioned that I monitor the weather from my desktop. They argued you could simply look out of the window if you needed to see how the weather was performing. They're right, but if you work in an office where getting up and about isn't easy, or you're thinking of planning an outdoor event, you'll want a rough indication of what the weather is going to be doing this evening.

Forecastfox 0.9 is another Firefox extension that will ena ble you to grab an indication of the current and forthcoming weather forecast, without having to leave your web browser. If you're looking forward to a planned holiday, you can even change locations, so you could keep an eye on the weather expected at your holiday destination.

Preview open tabs with Firefox Showcase

Screengrab_28 Tabs are a fantastic addition to web browsing. Only a couple of years ago, if you wanted to surf more than one website, it required you to open an additional browser window. More often than not, your Task Bar was full of open browser windows. However, even with the addition of tabs, it's not particularly easy to determine the websites that you have open within each tab, as they offer a text-only preview.

Firefox Showcase 0.9 is a Firefox extension that will enable you to preview open tabs as if they are a snapshot of the website. You can quickly preview a website and go directly to that page. The only issue may be that similar open websites all appear the same, even with the preview.

Check your system components with SIW

Screengrab_152 When you ordered your computer, you probably spent a fair while choosing between different manufacturers, the components within each computer and the price advertised. However, when it arrived, did you check whether the components specified shipped with the PC? For instance, is your graphics card the card specified, with the 256MB memory upgrade?

SIW 1.66.624 is a tool that will enable you to check your system and report back on the installed components. You can find out the make and speed of your installed CPU, memory and everything else that shipped with your computer. There are other tools that perform similar tasks, such as Belarc Advisor or Fresh Diagnose.

Partition your drive with Partition Logic 0.66

Grab When you purchase your new PC it often ships with a large hard drive, partition in one continuous block. Which often means you're stuck with the large drive as Windows and other applications have already been installed. You could re-partition your drive, which means chopping your drive in to different segments. Perhaps one for your system, one for music, another for your work.

Partition Logic 0.66 is a tool that you can use to partition your drive. Sadly it's not a Windows-based tool, so you need to burn the supplied ISO image to a CD and then boot in to the CD. It ships with its own operating system, which enables you to partition just about any kind of formatted drive, which is a bonus. Download Partition Logic 0.66.

Host your own virtual OS with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007

Screenshot_4 Nervous of upgrading your Windows XP to Windows Vista? Want to try Windows Vista before you decide to wipe Windows XP and move across to the new operating system? Either way, there's no reason why you can't install a virtual operating system, which means that you can run another copy of Windows on top of your existing Windows installation. As the operating system is virtual, you can install whatever you want and then simply re-install or scrap the virtual OS if things go wrong.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is the latest version of their virtual operating system software. Best still, it has been released completely free of charge! You can now test and run Windows Vista in a virtual environment or, if you already have Windows Vista, run virtual operating systems on this new OS.

Manage your digital photos using Adobe Lightroom v1

Screengrab_151 There are plenty of tools to help you manage, edit and print your digital photos. These include commercial and freeware applications. However, there aren't too many tools aimed at the (semi)professional photographer. Apple have their Aperture, which is Mac-only. This tool enables you to import your RAW photos, touch-up each photo individually, export and even create your own photo book, slideshow or homepage.

Adobe Lightroom v1 is another tool that is aimed squarely at Apple Aperture. Better still, there's a version for Windows and a trial has just been released. Lightroom v1 will enable you to import those digital photos, use a lightbox to manage them individually and then edit and export.

Digitise your old LPs and tapes with VinylStudio

Grab140_32 Back in the late 80s, vinyl contained mixes that you didn't get on a CD single, such as that extended 12¨ remix. There are also plenty of old tracks that you might not be able to download through iTunes or other digital stores, so you have no option to keep your old LPs, tapes and VHS cassettes. However, sooner rather than later your cassette player may cease to function, or you might want to reply your old stereo. Now's the time to digitise these tracks and to get them on to your computer.

VinylStudiois a tool that enables you to connect your old vinyl record deck, cassette player or even your VHS recorder and will digitise the audio to your computer. You can then edit your tracks, add custom effects and save as required. VinylStudio is a complete audio toolkit.

View your Outlook calendar on your desktop

Grab140_31 Microsoft Outlook is a powerful tool, combining your email, a calendar, your 'to do' list and the ability to contact other users and share their information through an Exchange server. However, as we mostly use Outlook for our email, we rarely look at the calendar and rely on reminders to keep us informed of forthcoming meetings or tasks.

Outlook on the Desktop 1.3.1 is a tool that enables you to take your Outlook calendar and will place it on your desktop, so it's always on view, whatever application you're using. It's dynamic, so will update whenever you add/remove anything from Outlook. Outlook on the Desktop requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2+ and Microsoft Outlook 2000 or higher.

Start applications, quickly, using RunIt

Screengrab_150 If you have a lot of applications installed on your computer, you can leave an icon shortcut on your desktop. However, these quickly distract from your work and leave your desktop looking cluttered. The other option is to find your installed applications through the Start Menu, but this takes time.

RunIt 2.01 is a simple tool that enables you to launch and start applications by linking them to a keyword. For instance, you could assign 'photo' to Adobe Photoshop and when you enter 'photo' within RunIt, Adobe Photoshop would launch. Better still, RunIt resides within your System tray so it is easily accessible at all times. You don't need to launch RunIt simply to start an another application.

View your digital photos using FastStone Image Viewer

Screengrab_149 Only a few years ago, with the rise and popularity of digital cameras, software developers were falling over themselves to produce digital photo editing and viewing software. There were a fair few commercial apps and a selection of freeware. These days, there aren't that many decent free image viewers that provide the basic tools to view, manage and edit our photos.

FastStone Image Viewer 3 is a 5-star rated image viewer that will manage the basics. You don't need to worry about all the advanced fancy tools getting in the way, which are embedded within many of the commercial applications. This tool will give you the basics to manage and edit your images. The latest version is now Windows Vista compatible.

Back up, restore and update your drivers with Driver Genius 7

Screengrab_148 When you install Windows for the first time, the majority of your drivers are supplied on the Windows installation CD. Windows doesn't check the Internet for the latest drivers during installation. Most of us then either forget to look for the latest drivers or simply do not bother. Those users who want the latest drivers spend ages looking for them, so do not want to repeat the process if they have to re-install Windows, in the future.

Driver Genius Pro 7 is a tool that will enable you to locate the latest drivers for the hardware installed within your computer. You can automate this process or manually choose to search for the latest drivers. You can also back up your current drivers in case you have to re-install Windows in the future.

Upload files to your homepage using TurboFTP

Screengrab_147 You'd be amazed how few users take advantage of their free homepage, provided by their ISP. Many of us are offered anywhere between 50-200MB of space, easily enough to store a few documents, backup our important data or swap files between different computers. Think about it: only you know your password, so you can easily use this space to store files you need to share between your work and home computer. Like a temporary storage point for your files.

TurboFTP 5.3 is a tool that will enable you to get your files to and from your homepage. Simply enter the address you are given by your ISP, your username and password and connect. TurboFTP is ok, but definitely not commercial-grade software. If you're looking for an FTP client, try our full commercial WS_FTP Home 2006 or the free 5-star rated SmartFTP 2.

View travel guides from your computer with Schmap Player

Screenshot_2 If you're a keen traveller, you've probably got travel books, recommendations, photos and much more, all over your house. Wouldn't it be great if you could collate this information, digitally store it on your computer and then refer to this information when you're planning on further travel.

Schmap Player 2 is a digital based travel guide that will enable you to download guides for towns and areas, from the Schmap website, and store them on your computer. You can browse for local sights, top places to shop, to stay and much more. However, although the travel guides are well presented, some of the information can be a bit scarce and a little out of date.

Analyse your CPU and chip technology using CPU-Z

Screengrab_146 When you first bought your PC, you probably didn't purchase a top-of-the-range computer as the difference between the price of the 2.0Ghz and 2.6Ghz model meant that you couldn't really justify the additional cost. Two years down the line, that 2.6Ghz chip will be based around old technology and PC suppliers will be almost giving the chips away. Now is the time to upgrade, but you need to make sure that you're selecting the right CPU.

CPU-Z 1.39 is a tool that will enable you to determine the type, manufacturer and speed of your CPU (and CPU chipset), thus enabling you to find out whether a CPU upgrade is available for your computer. It gives you information about the CPU cache and so much more, which might be relevant to the upgrade.

Manage, edit and burn ISO images with ImgBurn

Screengrab_145 Provide files across the Internet isn't always easy. What compression/archive format do you use and will novice users be able to open your archive and install your software? You could create a self-extracting archive, but would the end-user know how to work with the file contents? Another option is to create a folder or disc of your contents and then simply supply as an ISO image. The end-user simply burns these files to their own CD or extracts them from the original ISO file.

ImgBurn 2.2 is a tool designed to work with ISO images. It's as simple as locating the ISO image, inserting a blank CD and then burning the contents to the CD. Effectively this is all it does do, but does the job well. If you simply want to burn an ISO image to CD, use ImgBurn 2.2.

Take and edit screengrabs using WinSnap 2

Screengrab_144 Taking screengrabs is relatively easy. Taking grabs of obscure windows and other objects is less easy. There are quite a few excellent screen grabbing tools available, including Screenshot Captor and Faststone Capture, both updated regularly. WinSnap 2 attempts to go further than these two tools by including advanced image editing and effects so that you can add shadows and other elements to your grabs.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but WinSnap 1 used to be freeware and was only released recently? Some people would regard it as excellent marketing. I'd regard it as frustrating for the end-user: releasing a product as freeware, then ramping the same product to shareware, within a few months. Still, it's a good product and WinSnap 2 now supports Vista and enables you to grab Aero windows, so it's worth a look.

Speed up your computer with WinPatrol 2007

Logo140 When you start your computer, you'd be surprised how many applications, libraries and files launch with your machine. Some are more problematic than others and rely on a specific launch sequence to start correctly. You may find your system boots very slowly whilst it waits for a particular application to start.

WinPatrol 2007 is the latest version of the highly-rated system analysis and optimisation tool. With the latest version you are now able to locate applications that start slowly and change the sequence or delay their startup. WinPatrol 2007 contains all the old favourite tools, just updated. You can stop applications from running annoying update checks on a daily or weekly basis, for example.

Set up your own proxy server using FreeProxy

Grab140_30 Some Internet providers used to (and may still do) set up their own proxy server that would speed up and limit access to the Internet. Many companies use a proxy server to limit access to particular websites or to throttle access during the day. You can set up your own proxy server. If you have a home where each family member wants access to the Internet, you can determine when and how they access the net.

FreeProxy 3.92 is a free proxy server that enables you to control access to your Internet connection. For instance, if you live in a shared house of students, you could enable other people to use your connection, but limit their bandwidth or access rights.

Automatically check for system issues with PCPal

Grab140_29 Some of the warnings that you see within Windows XP and Windows Vista can be rather frustrating. Yes, we know we've not turned on the firewall, we know that we're visiting a non-secure site and so on. However, there are some warnings we do want to see. We want to know when the latest security updates are available for our operating system or whether there's anything we can do to enhance our system performance.

PCPal is a tool that will enable you to keep an eye out on your system and will automatically warn you if your system needs your attention. For instance, it will even help you detect radio interference that will affect your wireless connection. You can turn on or off a number of these warnings, if they are not applicable to your machine. Download PCPal.

Take your passwords on the road with RoboForm2Go

Screengrab_143 Our web browsers securely store our usernames and passwords and can be configured to automatically populate web forms with the information we've previously used in our forms. However, if you move across to another computer, borrow a laptop to take on the road or use your computer at home, these passwords and other personal information isn't available on this other computer. This means you have to remember your personal info, at all times.

RoboFormToGo 6.8.7 is a tool that will enable you to take your passwords on the move. This means that you can automatically populate web forms with personal information, taken from your portable password manager. Once you've used the tool on another computer, all evidence is removed for security reasons.

Boot your computer more quickly using FontFrenzy

Grab140_28 When we first turn on our new computer, it boots within seconds. After installing (and removing) software, the Registry expands, more apps boot with your computer and your disk becomes defragmented. Result is that your machine takes much longer to boot. You can solve these problems, but you may not realise that Windows will look for and load fonts when you boot your computer. If you're an illustrator, with loads of installed fonts, you might find that this is the main reason your computer has slowed.

FontFrenzy 1.5 is a tool that will enable you to load and use fonts only when they're required for a specific application. This means that when you boot Windows, only the fonts required for the system will be loaded in to memory.

Configure your 'Send To' menu with SendToToys

Grab140_27 If you click on a file on your desktop, you'll be able to right-click on this file and the system menu will offer you a number of options. If it's an image, you can choose to preview. If it's a archive, you can use an archive management tool to either open or extract the file. However, there's another option, the 'Send To' menu. This is a user-configurable menu that enables you to send a file to a destination folder, recipient or application.

SendToToys 2.5 is a free tool that enables you to configure this 'Send To' menu. As well as being supplied with a number of pre-configured options, you can create a default mailto: recipient, the location of particular folders and also add applications installed on your computer (so you could send a file to a selected application). Download SendToToys 2.5.

Optimise and tweak Firefox with Firetune

Screengrab_142 When developers produce software, they configure it for the average user. Most likely a user who is connected to a 1MB/sec broadband connection. However, you can often tweak and optimise software through third-party tools. Mozilla Firefox is no exception and there's now a tool that enables you to get the most from Firefox, depending on the type of Internet connection you use.

Firetune 1.1.4 is a tweaking tool for Firefox 1.x and 2.x users (don't use this tool with the alpha 2 preview version of Firefox 3). It doesn't do a great deal apart from attempt to speed up and optimise Firefox, depending on your system. This is as easy as selecting whether you have a fast computer and fast/slow Internet connection.

Protect against virus attack with the free AVG Anti-Virus

Screengrab_141 You've got to admit it, most security software is a tad bloated. It attempts to do everything, from acting as a software firewall on your computer, through to parental controls. This can slow your machine as your security software is controlling just about every function that you do with your computer, from checking email through to opening ZIP files.

AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 is free lightweight anti-virus tool that's been available for many years and is tried and tested software, rated highly by vnunet.com and other web users. Indeed, it's our current most downloaded software product from vnunet.com/downloads. Sadly this product is only available for non-commercial personal-use only, but if you're a home user it's worth a look.

Do more with Google Toolbar for Firefox

Screengrab_140 Google offer various services for web users. GMail enables you to send and receive email across the web, the bookmark services for Firefox will sync your bookmarks across your various computers, you can create your own documents and spreadsheets online and even personalise your own Google homepage.

Google Toolbar for Firefox 3 brings a lot of these and other functions, together, within one toolbar for Firefox users. However, whether you really need a lot of these tools accessible from one toolbar is another matter. For instance, Firefox already has a search bar for Google, you can add an extension to check your Google Mail and a tool to sync your bookmarks. With the latest v3 toolbar, you can add your own buttons to your bar and much more.

Upgrade to a bigger hard drive with HDClone Free 3.2.4

Screengrab_139 It's easy to buy a completely new computer, but how do you get your old data across to the new machine? Most new PCs have a spare cable for another hard drive. Grab your old drive from your old system, connect it to the spare cable in your new PC and then simply clone or migrate the contents of your drive across to your new drive. Alternatively, if you want to add a larger drive to your old PC, simply add the drive, select the destination and clone your data across. Then simply reboot with your larger drive.

HDClone Free 3.2.4 will enable you to clone data from your old drive to a new drive. For instance, if you're stuck with a small 80GB drive, go out and buy a 250GB drive, install in your new computer and use HDClone Free to clone the contents to the new drive.

Pin a sticky note to your desktop with NoteZilla 7

Screengrab_138 Are you one of those people who has notes for everything on their desk and all over your computer monitor? They can easily get knocked off your desk when the cleaners come around to clean the office at the end of the day. They're also a waste of resources. You have to keep throwing them away, whereas a sticky note on your screen could be edited, deleted or extended with the click of your mouse.

NoteZilla 7 is the latest version of the sticky note system for your desktop. You can create sticky notes and then send them to other people across your internal network. You can create notes for different kinds of activities, such as your 'to do' list, the shopping list and tasks that need to be completed by the end of the week.

Need a basic but competent word processor? Try AbiWord

Screengrab_29 Office suites are generally made up a document writer, spreadsheet, database, presentation tool and sometimes and email client. Which components do you actually use? Most of us use the document editor and perhaps the email client. The spreadsheet might be useful from time to time. However, did you really need to install and purchase an Office suite just to edit and write documents?

AbiWord 2.5.1 is a basic but fairly competent document editor that looks similar to Word and can read basic Word documents. Better still, it has plugin support, so if you can't find a feature you require, there might be a plugin available. It's also cross-platform compatible, so the version you use on your Windows machine will be the same or very similar to the Mac OS X edition.

Backup and restore your system drivers

Screengrab_137 We backup important files, data and essential files such as our fonts. However, what we don't do is backup our drivers. If you've had your system for a while, you might have spent time downloading and installing the latest system drivers and you don't want to have to find your driver discs, or rely on the Windows supplied drivers to manage your hardware.

DriverMax 2.1 is a tool that will enable you to backup (and restore) your system drivers where necessary. If you ever need to reinstall Windows in the future, you simply need to reinstall your backed up drivers, after re-installation. It's a painless and quick process and takes less than 10 minutes to backup your drivers. You can also use DriverMax to find the latest information about your installed drivers, if a new version has been released.

Make disc burning simple with Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5

Screengrab_25 Over the last few years, burning software have expanded to incorporate other media-related technologies, such as image managers, video editors and similar tools. This means that you have to navigate through a range of other tools just to burn a simple audio and data CD. Remember that these tools are there to burn a CD/DVD, quickly. That's the primary function.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 is a burning suite with a difference. It still enables you to create an audio CD or DVD, but enables you to do this quickly. If you want to create an audio CD for your car, simply drag the tracks to the relevant part on the interface and burn. The new version enables you to support Blu-ray amongst other new technologies. Download Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5.

Worth the wait? Keep an eye out on Netscape 9

Screengrab_136 It wasn't so long ago that the two big browsers, Internet Explorer and Netscape, were constantly at loggerheads to become the web browser of choice. For for a while, Netscape was the popular choice and looked like becoming the number one option. It only really changed when Internet Explorer was bundled with Windows and it was simply easier to use the browser built-in to the system.

Netscape hasn't been that popular for a while. Netscape 8 was programmed externally, but a third-party, and didn't really go down well. It was never going to beat Firefox or Opera. However, Netscape have released some preview information about Netscape 9, which is being programmed internally. At the moment it's only a teaser, but the browser should be available some time during March.

Sync an Outlook database across two computers

Screengrab_135 If you use Microsoft Outlook on your work computer and your laptop, when you're out the office on business, you have one or two options: you could set up your laptop-based Outlook to leave the email messages on your POP3 server then download them when you get back to your office. However, if you're out of the office for a long time, this might not prove efficient. The alternative is to use a synchronisation tool to sync your email across the two computers.

SynchPst 2.3 will enable you to synchronise your email, contacts and other Outlook items across two computers. If you add meeting and contact information when you're on the road, you can sync this back to your office computer, later. If you have more than one PST file, you can also merge them together within one database file.

Design your own style sheets with TopStyle Pro

Grab140_26 Not that long ago there wasn't such thing as a WYSIWYG web editor and certainly no template-based editors. If you wanted to code your own website, you had to get in to the raw HTML and create the page from scratch. When Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) were developed, this enabled designers to create a palette of styles and colours that can be applied to any page or site.

TopStyle Pro 3.12 is one of the best CSS editors available. It's been around for ages and the history stretches back to old Dreamweaver days when a program called Homesite used to be bundled with the web development tool. There were many developers who preferred Homesite, but it was dropped by Macromedia and the developer started his own company, BradSoft. Anyway, we're digressing. The point is that it's an advanced style sheet editor that will enable you to code up your pages.
