Turn off information sharing with XP-AntiSpy 3.96-6

Screenshotantispy_2 Windows XP includes a background service that will examine your system and check against a Microsoft database. It enables you to receive updates, automatically. The snag is, how do you know what information is being transferred regarding your system contents. Nothing sinister, but people are never really assured about the information stored on their computer usage.

XP-AntiSpy 3.96-6 is a small but handy utility that enables users to disable some of the built-in update and authentication features within Windows XP. It will enable you to turn off anything that requires you to share information (personal or regarding your system), over the Internet. To turn off these features, simply click off the supplied checkbox and quit the application.

Use Download Accelerator Plus 8.5.6.3 to speed up your downloads

Screengrabaccelerator_2 Many of us have used download managers to help try and increase download speeds. It can be frustrating when downloading, and the file stops downloading correctly  sometimes halfway through or even at the end of the download, having to start all over again to obtain a particular file.

Download Accelerator Plus 8.5.6.3 is said to increase download speeds by up to 400 percent. It searches multiple sites that are most effective for serving downloads. It uses multiserver connections for optimal performance of dial-up or broadband connections.

Download Accelerator Plus 8.5.6.3 automatically recovers from shutdowns, lost connections, and other errors. DAP is fully integrated into Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Opera, and within Internet Explorer there’s the option of a toolbar. Other features include scheduling, and a unique AlwaysResume service. The latest revision also includes a new tabbed downloads option.

Download the latest Norton Internet Security suite 2008

Screengrab_norton For a many years, Symantec have been developing Internet security software, made popular by the number of pre-installed installations, found on new PCs.

Norton Internet Security 2008 is the newest update and contains a suite of security tools, including an anti-virus client, anti-spyware, firewall, anti-spam and more.

In the newest revision, Symantec have introduced the "Identity Safe" feature that protects users' identities when shopping, banking, or browsing online. Another new product is the Browser Defender, which protects against "drive-by" downloads and other new threats that exploit various vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. Other enhancements include a re-written anti-virus engine that is said to improve performance and reside more quietly on your PC.

Store your notes and thoughts on your desktop using NoteZilla

Screengrab_3 What would you describe as the life-span of a typical sticky note that you'd attach to your monitor? Not finite, that's for sure. Your monitor can get rather warm, we have a bad habit of leaving our machine turned on overnight, which can affect the stickiness of our notes. If the office gets a clean each morning and your note has fallen on the office floor, you might find that it's disappeared after a long weekend. The old-fashioned sticky paper notes are perhaps not the way forward.

NoteZilla 7 is a tool that will enable you to post sticky notes to your computer desktop, in an electronic format. You can use different colours for different notes, mark-up your text in alternative fonts, embolden titles and close unimportant notes so they don't take up too much real estate on your screen.

Erase your personal web trail using Free Internet Window Washer

Screengrab_2 When you browse the net, all sorts of information is stored on your computer. You'll probably be surprised. Most websites result in cookie and other tracking information being stored through your browser. They can establish where you've originated from and what you like to do on the website. All very personal information. Your web history is logged, the files you've downloaded and there are all sorts of temporary files stored on your machine. You could be embarrassed if someone had access to your PC.

Free Internet Window Washer 2.1 is a tool that will enable you to cleanse the browsing history, files and other data that is stored when you browse the Internet using Internet Exporer, Firefox, Opera or most regular web browsers. Simply put, run this tool at the end of every important browsing session, and you can be assured that your personal data will be secure.

Store and manage your ideas and thoughs with wikidpad

Screengrab_wiki Whilst we work through the day we’re always thinking of ideas, whether they are business related, future plans, ideas for a project or tasks we need to complete over the rest of the day or week. Either way, we try and remember the ideas, plans and thoughts, or we jot them on paper or a post-it note and stick it to the front of our computer.

Your notes can be categorised making future access far easier. For instance, your notes about work will be stored within this category, rather than a random stack of sticky notes.

wikidPad 1.9 Beta 9 is a notebook for storing your ideas, to-do lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down. It’s a simple desktop application that helps you to keep track of all your thoughts and ideas, work orientated or otherwise.

Manage your large downloads with Download Accelerator Manager 3

Screengrab Despite upgrading to a fast 8MB/s broadband connection, download bottlenecks are not your system, your broadband nor your router, they are at the server you're downloading from. For instance, try downloading the latest 1GB game demo and you might actually be downloading from a server in Japan. Leave it running overnight and you might find that the download stops and cannot be restarted. Such a pain in the backside. This can be solved using a download manager.

Download Accelerator Manager 3 has just been released and is an excellent download manager. The latest version has an improved download accelerator, which means you should receive your downloads more quickly. Other new features will enable you to download from YouTube and grab other online video.

Quickly produce an audio CD using FinalBurner 1.20

Screengrab_2 Burning packages have evolved in to 'media suites', that have become complicated and difficult to use, if you simply want to perform a simple task. Sometimes we’d just like to burn CD’s quickly, perhaps a customised audio CD for our personal CD player or for a car journey.

FinalBurner 1.20.0.107 is a freeware alternative to expensive, feature heavy CD and DVD burners. It enables you to create data, audio, DVD disks and burn them onto any type of media and you can also create an ISO image of a disk. FinalBurner is designed for ease of use and doesn’t include too many extraneous features. CD production is limited to a few simple mouse clicks, which is ideal for most users and it enables you to produce an audio CD quickly, without having to wade through your media suite.

Manage your media collection using MediaMonkey 3

ScreengrabMany of us have music or media libraries on our home computers, sourced from our CDs or old LPs, purchased from a online music store or from alternative sources. Quite often these audio tracks are lacking artwork and other information required for your library.

MediaMonkey 3.0.0.1066
is an easy-to-use media manager for serious music collectors. It can manage many different media files,  can source missing album art and track information from the web and includes a tag editor and an automated file renamer to help organise your media files. It includes a CD ripper, CD Burner, and an audio converter for saving your music files. MediaMonkey 3.0.0.1066 has manual or automated play list editors for creating music mixes. Its player automatically adjusts volume levels so that you don't have to continually adjust the volume control and also supports many of the Winamp plug-ins and visualizations.

Securely wipe important files using Disk Redactor 1.2

Diskredactor How many times have you worked with personal information, data or photos and simply dragged them to your trashcan, thinking that the files have been deleted from your system? They haven't and it could be embarrassing for you. Anyone who has access to your computer could quite easily use an undeletion tool to recover the files after deletion.

Disk Redactor 1.2 is a free tool that you can use to completely erase files from your machine. Instead of using your trashcan, drag or open them with Disk Redactor and it will be erased. This process works by completely overwriting the file and old data on your drive. Once overwritten, you can't retrieve the old files.

Internet Explorer users: try an alternative with Maxthon 2

Screengrab_2 The most frustrating part of surfing the Internet is that there are website that still insist on using Internet Explorer, particular financial institutions and sites that require Active X. You've probably tried using Opera and Firefox, but ended up back with Internet Explorer, missing some of the enhanced features you experienced with the alternative browsers.

Get hold of the IE-based Maxthon 2.0.3.3958 and you'll have the chance to enjoy not only a enhanced multi-window interface but also a more extensive list of extras that can make your browsing experience more productive and enjoyable.

Maxthon 2.0.3.3958 is a free web browser that requires few resources and even fewer addons.

Windows XP users: quickly locate files with Windows Desktop Search

Screengrab When we look back, there are tools and functions that should have been integrated in to Windows a few revisions prior to the current edition. One of these functions is the facility to search and locate files on your PC, without delay. Well, without serious delay. Mac OS X has had the Spotlight facility for a couple of years and now Vista contains similar functionality. Third party developers have introduced their own versions of instant desktop tools, such as Copernic Desktop Search.

Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a free instant-search tool from Microsoft, designed specifically for Windows XP SP2 users. It will catalogue your entire drive and then enable you to find files on your system by entering a few keywords. It won't invade your privacy and won't catalogue stuff such as your web history and similar personal information.

Catalogue & manage your media collection using Libra 0.8.5

Screengrab_2 With an extensive DVD, video, CD and book collection, are you really aware of what you own or have lent out to your friends? It's so easy to get excited in a sale and purchase a duplicate copy of a DVD that you already own. We've all done it.

Libra 0.8.5
is a free personal audio and video management tool, enabling you to create a library and organise your books, audio CDs, movies and games.

If you have an extensive collection it’s easy to get your data in to Libra. If you have a webcam, you can turn this in to a barcode scanner and simply scan in your audio CDs, books and DVDs. Libra will automatically retrieve the information, updating your library with information about a particular item, including the artwork you’ll need to visually represent the item in your catalogue.

Libra 0.8.5 enables you to quickly find groups of products based on specific information, and if your library becomes extensive, you can always print out a reference list or even upload library information to your homepage which can be shared.

Check out the latest free anti-spyware tool, Ad-Aware 2007

Screengrab Ad-Aware has been long-regarded as highly-rated tool for combating both spyware and adware. It’s a versatile anti-spyware tool designed to minimise system resources. The latest version includes enhanced adware and malware detection along with a brand new interface. All three versions of Ad-Aware 2007 have been updated, Free, Plus, and Pro. We have the free version available to download.

Ad-Aware 2007 Free 7.0.1.6 is still a very powerful security tool, that offers complete scan and removal. The latest release of the Free Edition has faster scanning and detection whether this involves smart scanning or a full system scan.  Ad-Aware 2007 Free 7.0.1.6 offers a number of additional improvements including incremental definition updates for faster downloads, and the ability to create system restore points to move back in time.

Customise your Vista-based Start Menu with Start++

Grab140_2 Although the Vista Start Menu does differ slightly from the previous XP revision, there aren't too many new enhancements and it's just organised differently, rather than anything radical. However, those ingenious third party developers have been working updates to the Vista Start Menu that add further customisation.

Start++ 0.7.5 is a tool that will enable you to customise your Vista Start Menu by adding new functionality to the area where you'd normally find and launch applications. For instance, you could use this area to show the local weather, an image or something depending on a keystroke that you enter in to the command prompt, or similar. You can configure Start++ to perform different functions depending on specific keystrokes.

Visual preview open Firefox tabs using Firefox Showcase

Screengrab_2 You open a tab and then another, and your open tabs all look the same. It's easy to get confused and you spend your time browsing between open tabs to find the site you previously visited. There surely must be an easier way to preview open tabs. On the Mac, there's a browser called Omniweb that enables you to open new tabs as previews located down the left hand side of your browser window. You can see a visual preview of each open tab and to view the website, simply click on the visual preview.

Firefox Showcase 0.9.3 enables you to do something very similar with Firefox. You can quickly see a visual preview of your open tabs - mini versions of each website, represented by an image. However, that's not all, you can also show each open web page as a thumbnail (to the size you require), a little like the Speed Dial feature in Opera.

Reduce the size of your Firefox tabs using FaviconizeTab

Grab140 It's all too easy to open new browser windows, particularly if we want to keep a website open for reference purposes. If you're using a laptop, you only need eight tabs to be open on screen and you'll soon find that you're scrolling across your tabs to find the tab relevant to your chosen website. Wouldn't it be so much easier if you could simply reduce the size of the tabs, perhaps down to the website icon, so you can quickly refer to each open tab by icon-only.

FaviconizeTab 0.9.7.4 is a Firefox extension that will enable you to reduce the size of your tabs to just the icon that represents each web page. This will allow Firefox to show more than a small number of tabs across the top of the screen.

Organise & plan your thoughts using Freemind

Screengrab If you have a long-term goal, there are various ways and means that you can attempt to reach this goal. There are always going to be obstacles along the way, hazards and tasks that you need to achieve and tick-off. You could create various notes, but then over time, you might find that your notes are rather scrappy in nature and certainly difficult to understand. You could re-write them again from scratch, but that can take time. The other alternative is project management software, but that's not always appropriate for mapping out your goals, thoughts and plans.

Freemind 0.8.0 is free and opensource mind mapping software designed to enable you to track and plan your thoughts and ideas in a digital format. You can easily link plans and thoughts together, see how they interact and even move around your ideas if you find that they interlink with other goals.

Add a visual preview to your Task Bar using Visual Task Tips

Grab140_2 Are you at that stage where you're envious of some of the new technologies released with Windows Vista, but aren't quite at the stage where you can justify the upgrade? There are many reasons for this, possibly due to compatibility with existing software and partly due to your boss being reluctant to shell out the upgrade required, particular when it is such a new operating system. There are ways to add some of the Vista technology to your existing XP-based operating system.

Visual Task Tips 2.2 is a tool that you can use to add a visual representation of applications that have been minimised to your Task Bar. In Vista, if you hold your mouse over minimised applications, you'll see a preview of the contents. This will add the same functionality to Windows XP. However, not every application will enable a preview, so it can be rather limited compared to the same option built in to Vista.

Securely wipe your drive with Paragon Disk Wiper 8.5

Grab140 From time to time, we'll want to move up to a larger hard drive. For instance, install Vista and grab audio from your CDs and you'll soon be running out of drive space. What do you do with your old drive once you've copied across the contents to your new drive? You could just give it another computer user or you could dispose of the drive. The snag is, even if you've formatted the drive, the contents are still accessible through a dedicated unformatting tool such as O&O FormatRecovery.

Paragon Disk Wiper 8.5 is a tool designed for one purpose: to cleanse and wipe a drive or drive partition so that anyone who receives or finds your drive cannot unformat the contents and find your personal info. It uses an algorithm to mess up and wipe the existing contents. Sure you might not need this tool very often, but at the price available, it might be worth considering for your collection.

Protect your PC with the latest free anti-spyware tool

Screengrab_3 When our second most popular download receives a much-needed upgrade, albeit a beta release, we needed to make this available to vnunet.com users. Why? Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5 has recently entered beta testing and this is a milestone for many computer users. Spybot was one of the very first free anti-spyware tools and has gathered a large following. The problem? Spybot 1.4 was around for ages and wasn't even Vista compatible.

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5 beta
is now available an is worth testing if you're a Vista user. It has a completely re-designed user-interface as well as a host of new features. We suggest you keep an eye out on vnunet.com/downloads over the next few weeks as a new public beta is expected. Although Spybot is completely free, you can always donate to encourage further development.

Permanently erase important files using Eraser 5.84

Screengrab_2 When you upgrade your old PC or hard drive, it's difficult to know what to do with the contents. You could wipe and format the drive, but there are specialist software tools that will enable someone to attempt to salvage the formatted data, which means your data, work and other files might fall in to the wrong hands. The only other option is to manually erase your files, but can you be assured that the tool of choice will really erase the data?

Eraser 5.84 has been around for eons and is a free tool that's designed to erase info, data and other files from your computer. These files are not just deleted, they are erased, written over and lost for good, so it's important you have backed up, copied or truly want rid of the data. The latest Eraser 5.84 is finally been made compatible with Windows Vista.

Completely remove installed applications with Total Uninstall

Screengrab There are a number of applications that, once installed, simply cannot be removed from your system. Whatever you do, they seem to try and start with your computer, leave Registry entries and more. This can apply to Vista where it's easy to install software, but when you find they are not truly Vista compatible, removing them can be a real pain. The automated Windows Add/Remove uninstall function is reasonably successful, but you have limited control over the procedure.

Total Uninstall 4.2 is commercial software that enables you to dig far deeper in to an installed application and will show the results of an installation - if it boots with your computer, what Registry entries have been written and more. You can then manually choose to remove the software. Once on your system, Total Uninstall 4.2 will monitor installations, taking note of what's installing and where, so you can use this powerful tool to remove apps in the future.

Quickly take a grab of your screen using HyperSnap-DX 6.21

Screengrab_5 There are many handy tools available, although some will only be used occasionally. It's good to have a decent screen grabbing tool, which will enable you to take screen capture and to grab text where it wouldn’t normally be possible.

HyperSnap DX 6.21.02 enables you to take pictures of almost anything you need from your computer screen including photos, images, text, and open applications. The text capture tool enables you to capture editable text from regions on the screen where regular copy/paste functions are not applicable such as dialogue boxes, menus, and error messages. This is an easy to use desktop tool that offers a hefty feature set and many of the most useful capture options around.

Edit your CSS code using the Free CSS Toolbox 1.01

Screengrab_4 There are times when you just need to make the occasional alteration to some CSS code, provided to you by another web developer. You don't really need to wheel out a commercial CSS editor for this purpose, when you simply need to make a couple of minor changes. A text editor isn't the best solution as you'll be lacking the correct formatting and colour coding.

Free CSS Toolbox 1.01 is a free 'light' version of the commercial Rapid CSS Editor from Blumentals Software, who have a tried and tested history of producing quality web development software. It's a simple CSS editor, but does come with a CSS validation tool that will go through your code and check the integrity before you commit to the final code.

Download media files and more with DownThemAll for Firefox

Screengrab_3Many of us have various picture albums or videos we’d like to share with or download from our friends or family which have been uploaded to our homepage or a picture-sharing site such as Flickr. Downloading more than one or many of these files can be tricky and can be time consuming.

DownThemAll 1.0 beta 1 is a Firefox extension that enables you to download various different files from a website quickly and easily. DownThemAll 1.0 beta 1 enables you to easily retrieve links and images from a web page, and it also enables you to filter certain file types from being t ransferred. It also features a download accelerator and can increase speeds by up to 400%, it allows you to pause and resume your downloads and is integrated with your web browser.

Give yourself free anti-virus protection using AVG Anti-Virus

Logo It’s becoming more and more difficult to protect your data from the danger posed by computer viruses. Malicious software has evolved and you can end up infected in a number of ways, from opening attachments, clicking on a phishing email or by simply visiting corrupt websites.

Fortunately, just as viruses have grown in strength and complexity over the years, so also have the tools used to combat them. With the latest generation of anti-virus software, you can give your computer a level of protection never before possible.

AVG Anti-Virus 7.5.484a1100 is a good free anti-virus product to protect your single home PC or workstation from external threats such as viruses, it’s simple to install and operate, and it can run in the background, providing uninterrupted protection.

Quickly diagnose system startup issues with Autoruns 8.72

Screengrab_2 Trying to uninstall problematic software isn't always the solution to system-related issues. If you find that when you boot your computer, it takes ages to start or another application fails, this might be down the way in which they start on your computer. For instance, some applications may require Internet access and your firewall will not allow this until it has started on your machine. This means your system has to wait until the firewall has started and the system slows on bootup.

Autoruns 8.72 is a tool that you can use to check on the files and applications that start with your computer. You can then quickly prevent certain applications from starting, close others, rearrange the order in which they start and more. You might find that using a tool such as Autoruns 8.72 helps you with problematic security software, for example.

Replace Notepad completely using Notepad++

Screengrab Some Windows-related applications are rather confusing. Whereas Microsoft reacted to the competition and added new functionality to Internet Explorer, including tabbed windows and more, they've never really felt compelled to enhance the old Notepad. It's essentially the same tool with the same look and feel that was around in the 90s. That's fine for pasting and copying basic text, but for anything more extensive, you'll nearly always need to look for a rival product.

Notepad++ is one of the many free Notepad alternatives. It will enable you to syntax your code, if you're a web developer, or simply use it as a basic Notepad replacement, with multiple tabs, so you can open more than one document. Another alternative is the fantastic Notepad2.

Vista users, test the latest Outpost Security Suite 2008 beta

Grab140_2 Although Vista was released back in January 2007, there are still a small number of applications that are not yet fully Vista compatible. If you're an Outpost Security Suite 2007 user, you're stuck with a version that may prevent you from upgrading your operating system. All is not lost, however, as the brand new Outpost Security Suite 2008 is now available for a public preview. This is Vista compatible and ships with a number of improvements.

However, it's not all good. The beta preview will not support real-time email scanning in the first release, which is a likely source of Trojan attack - there are many emails that ship with attachments that look legitimate and can easily be opened by the end user. There are other problem as the anti-spam module isn't available and the web control module is also disabled. However, if you're an existing user, perhaps just bought Vista, it might be worth checking the first public preview of Outpost Security Suite 2008.

Keep your system clutter free using the new CCleaner 2 beta

Grab140 When you first bought your computer it was clutter-free, ran smoothly, booted quickly and seemed like a wise purchase. For this reason alone, we're keen to get to grips with the new system, test and install new software, remove applications we do not require and spend a while browsing the web. The more we use our computer, the more likely files and other unwanted data is left all over our system. The computer is full of temporary files, personal info and more.

CCleaner 2 beta is the first preview of the forthcoming major release of the system cleansing and optimisation tool. It's one of the best around and the latest version has been completely re-written and is far faster than previous editions. It also ships with a much-improved interface and a number of additional tweaks and enhancements.

Manage your downloads using Free Download Manager 2.5

Screengrab_5 Downloading large files from the Internet is always problematic. Leave the download unattended and there's a chance you'll lose the connection and need to start again from scratch. You may forget where you've saved the download or the incoming files may be downloading at such a painfully slow speed that it will be days before the download is complete.

Free Download Manager 2.5.7 is a powerful free download manager with many features that help users organise, schedule and speed-up downloads. You can choose between 3 different speed modes, either use maximum bandwidth or download files in the background with minimal impact on your other Internet activities. It integrates with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera and also offers a drop target where you can drag and drop files to that you want to download.

Free Download Manager 2.5.7 also has the ability to check if a file is known to be malicious, by checking a community database for any previously known issues with the file before it begins to download the file. Other features include automatic mirror lookup, download scheduling and resume, integrated zip file viewer, customisable download categories, media preview, and a website explorer.

Administer a remote server using the latest FileZilla 3

Screengrab_4 If you want to administer your own homepage, put files online or access content from an FTP server, most Internet users will need to use an FTP client. FileZilla 3 enables you to transfer files and navigate among folders, websites, and your computer. It also enables you to perform multiple file transfers simultaneously.

FileZilla 3 will remember passwords for various FTP sites and will handle all of the commands for transferring files, downloading multiple parts of the file at the same time to increase the speed of your downloads. You can control speed limits for both uploads and downloads.

FileZilla 3 is a free FTP client and has been designed for ease of use and with support for as many features as possible, while still being fast and reliable.

Store & manage your online passwords and personal info

Screengrab_3 Remembering your various Internet passwords and other online information can be tricky, as many of us have multiple passwords for online accounts. Worse, if you use a tool that cleanses your Internet activity after you've surfed the web, most of your personal information isn't available the next time you log on to the same website. Frustrating, but often necessary to protect your personal info.

RoboForm 6.9.6 is password and secure information manager that memorises and securely stores your user name and password information the first time you log into a site, then automatically supplies them when you return, whether you're using Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape. Online registration and the use of shopping checkout forms is made much faster - simply click on your RoboForm Identity and it will fill in the online form for you. You can set up multiple identities with different credit-card numbers, passwords, and contact information.

The new version 6.9.6 has various improvements such as a toolbar rather than the old autofill window, and the new search field in the toolbar makes finding and accessing any information quicker and easier.

Mac users, grab Skype for Mac 2.7 beta

Screengrab A frustrating aspect of being a non-Window user is that some of the latest technologies are not always available for the Mac operating system. For instance, take VoIP technology. Skype for Windows users could use video conferencing long before Skype for Mac users. Whereas the Skype for Windows version is at v3.5, the Mac version is still on release v2.6.

Skype for Mac 2.7 beta has now been made available along with a number of changes and enhancements. For instance, you can now access the Mac addressbook from within Skype, which means you can store IM contact information from within the addressbook, along with other contact details. You can also start and take part in a public chat as well as taking advantage of a much-improved file transfer user-interface. Download the Skype for Mac 2.7 beta.

Tweak & optimise your vanilla Vista installation using VistaTweaker

Grab140_3 Install Vista on your computer and your initial desire will be to install your other software and get on with using your new operating system. What you don't realise is that the operating system you've just installed is a vanilla-installation and ships with drivers that were included on the original Vista installation CD, along with few operating system optimisations. The very first thing you should do is to install something such as RadarSync 2007 and check for new drivers, then install a tweaking tool and make optimisations.

VistaTweaker 0.3 is a Vista-specific tweaking and optimisation tool that is designed to make the most from your Vista operating system. You can hide items, enhance the installation and much more. There are few, if any, Internet-based optimisations. Take a look at another tweaking tool, TweakVI Basic, for further tweaking options.

Protect your PC for free using Comodo Anti-Virus 2 beta

Grab140_2 Security developers are becoming so competitive that they are giving away their software to home users, on the pretext that they can sell multi-user licenses to corporate users. Their train of thought must be that the more they can get their name out in to the market and spread awareness, the more likely they are to be regarded as a strong brand, for consumers and corporations. With this in mind, you can now pick up a free firewall (see PC Tools Firewall Plus 2), free anti-spyware (Spyware Terminator 2) and free anti-virus applications.

Comodo Anti-Virus 2 beta is one of these free anti-virus suites and is from a reputable corporation. It ships with free virus definition updates for life (life of the product, not your life..) and automatic application updates. The only snag is that it doesn't appear to be Vista compatible.

Recover lost data from a formatted drive with O&O FormatRecovery

Grab140 We're told that you need to securely wipe your data when you sell or give away your old computer. However, if you do this and then find that you forgot to migrate some important files to your new hard drive, you can't simply use an unerase tool to locate and extract the contents. What you'll need is a dedicated application that will go through the entire drive and salvage the entire contents.

O&O FormatRecovery 4.1 is a specialised tool that will enable you to recover data from an old formatted drive. You can go for the entire drive or just a drive partition. You could simply connect the formatted drive to your new machine and then, when you find files you want to recover, simply copy them across to the new destination.

Protect your computer from the latest malicious software

Screengrab_2Having to protect your computer from outside threats is something which is a constant battle for most computer users, especially those of us who use the net on a daily basis.

Malicious software (or malware) is software which can appear legitimate, but will include hidden Trojans such as Blaster, Sasser and Mydoom. Trojan deve lopers are becoming more ingenious in the way they target Internet users, and the software is often undetected by standard virus detection software.

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.32 will help to remove specific, prevalent malicious software from an infected system. Computers will appear to function normally when infected, so Microsoft advises users to run this tool even if your computer appears to be running fine. Alongside this tool you should run an up-to-date anti-virus product to keep your computer secure from all malicious threats.

Give your PC a cleanse using Webroot Window Washer 6.5

Grab140 When you browse the Internet or use third-party applications, all sorts of information is stored and kept on your computer. If anyone has access to this computer, it's really easy to find where you've been and what you've been doing on this machine. Borrow a laptop from work, bored in a hotel room, and you might find that your IT helpdesk reports your activity to your boss. The solution is to install some cleansing software that will remove traces of your activity from your computer as you use the machine.

Webroot Window Washer 6.5 has been around for ages and is one of the better tools for erasing personal data from your computer. We're not talking about just deleting either, it will completely erase and eliminate unwanted material from your PC. The latest version is fully Vista compatible and will wipe data left by many third-party applications.

Grab the latest web browser Opera 9.23

Screengrab It is so refreshing to find developers who pro-actively improve their web browser, almost on a daily basis, keeping us informed of development through their blog. Whilst we wait for the next major release, Opera 9.5 (which is due for a beta release soon), the development team have been making minor changes to the current release.

Opera 9.23 is now available and contains a number of minor fixes, including stability issues around the Speed Dial function, issues with the scrolling wheel through Vista and more. If you're a current user of Opera, it will be worth upgrading to the latest release.

Tweak & optimise your PC with Ashampoo WinOptimizer 4.4

Screengrab_2 When you install Windows Vista or XP, you're installing vanilla operating system that has been designed to work across a range of different hardware configurations. It's not particularly optimised for your specific machine. You might not even realise that there are a number options within your operating system that are hidden as default. You can access these hidden options by using a tweaking or optimisation tool.

Ashampoo WinOptimizer 4.4 is a tweaking and optimisation tool that will enable you to get the most from your operating system, based on the software and hardware installed on your computer. It goes further though and includes a Registry tweaking tool and a disc defragmentation utility, so you can speed up your PC.

Beat others to a particular eBay item using Prospector Lite

Screenshot_3 Do you really have time to look through various eBay categories searching for the items you want to bid? It's easier to use a third-party tool to do the hard work for you. When you finally find the items you require, how many of us have the time to keep checking the status of the auction, whether anyone has outbid you and be there when the auction is close to ending (and when most bids are entered).

Prospector Lite 5.1 is a tool that you can use to track your various auctions and even set up a remote bid that will drop in to the auction whenever you require. The free version only enables you to check up to 30 items or searches a day, but that's more than enough for the basic eBay user.

Ultimate protection using PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 5

Screenshot_2 We often receive emails in our magazine department asking why their machine is performing erratically, boots more slowly than before or keeps creating a false-positive on various files they've downloaded from the Internet. The conclusion is that they've installed multiple anti-spyware tools, alongside an anti-virus application, for 'maximum protection'. The snag is that multiple installations of similar tools can cause more harm than good, so it's better to have one tool that offers protection against as many threats as possible.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 5 is the latest version of the anti-spyware tool, combined with an anti-virus module to protect against virus attack. This means you can ditch your existing anti-spyware and separate anti-virus tool and use the one tool instead.

Protect & backup data using Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 Express

Boxshot_2 Whatever operating system you're using, it's always a wise idea to backup your important data, work and other information. Although most of us won't ever lose our data nor suffer from hard drive failure, you never really know what's around the corner and, if you do suffer from hard drive failure, you'll have to start all over again, from scratch.

Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 Express
is a free Vista-compatible backup tool that enables you to either backup an entire drive or simply drive contents. However, it only backs up your data and will not restore the information if you ever suffer from data loss. For this, you need to upgrade to Paragon Drive Backup 8.5 Personal Edition, which contains a restore function as well as a bootable recovery CD option.

Full commercial download worth £25: OrgPlus 7 SBE

Boxshot When a new employee starts within your organisation, they need to be offered a selection of notes and company information so they can get started as quickly as possible. OrgPlus 7 SBE is our current full commercial application, worth £25. It will enable you to create your own organisation chart. It will only enable you to produce a chart with up to 30 boxes, but that's more than enough for a small to medium organisation and, in particular, your department. Download and try OrgPlus 7 SBE and remember to register to get your serial code.

Manage your downloads using the latest Orbit Downloader 2.1.6

Screenshot There are certain tasks that every one of us does when we surf the Internet. One of these tasks is seeking out the latest applications, game demos and other downloadable files. The snag is, some of these applications can take an age to download, often stop before completely downloading and can be downloaded to various locations on your computer, so you lose track of where they are located.

Orbit Downloader 2.1.6 is a highly-rated free download manager that, at a basic level, will manage downloads from various websites, through your web browser. It will speed up downloads, source them from various locations, collate your files in one folder and much more. The latest version enables you to download online streaming movies and other media.

Find & destroy malware using the latest Comodo BO Clean 4.25

Screengrab There are all sorts of threats that can affect your computer whilst you surf the Internet. The scariest scenario can occur when you trust a particular anti-spyware tool and that turns out to be the culprit that resulted in a possible infection. It's all too easy to install innocent-looking software for it to turn out to be malicious software and, as a results, infects your computer.

Comodo BO Clean 4.25 is a highly-rated free anti-malware tool that will work alongside your anti-spyware and anti-virus tools to protect against malicious software and other threats. It's highly rated by vnunet.com web users and comments indicate it's highly successful. As it can be used alongside your existing tools, and offers a low profile, it's worth considering.

AirFoil 2 was a Mac-only product that's now available for your PC. In conjunction with the Apple Airport Express hardware, you can use it to stream any kind of audio source to remote speakers, whether they are connected to a Hi-FI, TV or other source. Media managers: Libra 0.8.4 versus MediaMan 2.7

Screengrab How many of us have an extensive CD, book and DVD collection? I'd bet that most of us do not even know the DVDs in our collection, often leading to us purchasing another copy of a previously-stocked DVD, when it becomes available in sale. Can you remember if you've lent a DVD to a friend or whether someone has borrowed a CD? Either way, you could do with a media manager. A tool that will enable you to catalogue, track and manage your extensive media collection.

Libra 0.8.4 is the latest media manager and looks remarkably like MediaMan 2.7. Both are now rated 5-stars by vnunet.com web users. However, one is free for personal-use, whereas the other is a shareware product. Both enable you to scan in the media details through the barcode and both will download information from the Internet, meaning you do not need to enter the description or artwork, manually.

Download Libra 0.8.4 and compare it to MediaMan 2.7.

Synchronise your local and remote files using FTP Synchroniser

Screengrab Most of us have free web space as part of our broadband connection, but hardly any of us want to set up a homepage. Fear not, you could use this space to store your work, data, music and to share files between various computers. The remote server is always accessible, providing you have an Internet connection. You could be in New York or London, each way it's always available. The only snag is that the files you store on your laptop need to be synchronised with the remote server and vice versa.

FTP Synchroniser 3.4.38 is a FTP application designed for one purpose, to enable you to synchronise your files from your computer to a remote server and the other way around. If the same files apply across multiple computers, then you can use the bi-directional synchronisation to make sure the correct files are available on either machine.
