The ZIP archive was the only real archive format used on the Windows platform and has since become the industry standard. WinZip is now a commercial application and there are plenty of free archive managers that will enable you to open or extract files from ZIP and other archives.

jZip is one of these free archive management tools and will support ZIP, RAR, 7-Zip and other formats, which means that the major archive-types are covered.
