Prevent erased data from being recovered with DriveScrubber

Ds_screen_large_2 Your PC is home to a wealth of personal and sensitive information, especially if it’s used on a daily basis. You may empty your recycling bin, but this does not completely remove all elements of discarded files and folders. Your computer will still store remnants of removed items, some of which can be recycled and recovered. As your computer is home to so much personal information, such as online passwords and bank details, it’s important that you can permanently erase drive content when needed.

Iolo DriveScrubber enables you to not erase whole drives but you can also use it to remove all traces of previous deleted data, whilst leaving folder and files and, most importantly, your operating system intact. You can also use it to remove malware or infection from spyware, keeping your drive in optimum condition.

Quickly design your own homepage using Rapidweaver 4

Grabjunky Designing your homepage isn't that easy. There are various online tools that will enable you to produce a quick site, but more often than not, these design tools will require you to host the site, rather than enable you to host it on your own server. Move across to a Mac and you'll soon find there are a range of tools that are supplied with a collection of pre-defined templates, so you can get your site online as quickly as possible. You just need to drop in the text, graphics and other components.

Rapidweaver 4 is a superb commercial Mac-only web design tool that's undergone a major refresh, for the Leopard operating system. It uses various components found in Leopard to add visual improvements to the user interface. It now looks superb and, best of all, is a free upgrade for any existing Rapidweaver 3.x user.

Take control of your projects using Task Coach

Grabjunky_4 If you've never worked as a project manager, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you do not need a management tool to control your projects, schedule tasks or control costs. You probably think you can do it in your head. However, everyone has their own agenda, so it's very easy for your project to spiral out of control, move in the wrong direction, miss initial goals and to end up costing more than you originally expected.

Task Coach 0.7 is a preview of a project management application aimed at novice users. It's more of a self-appointed project management tool that enables you to track tasks from your desktop, rather than share the tasks and plans with other users. In the future, the developer is moving towards enabling the sharing of task information across the Internet.

Safeguard your wireless connection with Hotspot Shield

Grabjunky Take your laptop on the road, connect to a wireless network whilst you're waiting for your train and you may be forgiven for browsing your regular sites, accessing your email and writing other personal correspondence. The problem is that the person who owns this wireless network could, in theory, access the traffic from those connected to this network. Unlikely, but it could happen. There's also the chance that people could attempt to sniff traffic accessing wireless networks if they are serious hackers.

Hotspot Shield 1.04 is a free tool that will enable you to safeguard your access to a wireless network by using a secure tunnel to provide security for everything that you send/receive whilst you are connected. However, it's limited to 3GB of bandwidth per month, which should be enough for most laptop users.

Stay organised with Active Desktop Calendar

Adc4

Once you start using some desktop features such as sticky notes, it becomes difficult to revert to not using them. OK, there not a massively important application, but they are useful. The same goes for a simple desktop calendar, because they are so easy to refer to. More heavily featured desktop calendars will enable you to theme or change the way they look so you can incorporate it with your desktop, amongst other useful features.

Active Desktop Calendar 7.50 will show appointments and tasks on the desktop, enabling you to colour code, change fonts and mark dates with notes and alarms. You can also organise your data and share it with people on your local area network, without showing any notes that may be private.

Automate routine tasks with RoboTask

Untitled3 At work we often have routines or perform similar tasks on a daily basis, even when using a computer we tend to have routines. Some tasks we perform can be incredibly laborious but they may also be necessary, so is it possible to shorten the time it takes to complete some repetitive tasks? An automation tool for instance could benefit you work routine, by helping you copy and paste text or replying to multiple emails all with a simple key combination.

RoboTask 3.1 is a useful tool that enables you to automate particular tasks, programming it with a number of basic commands using your keyboard. This will help you to carry out the more basic, mundane or just plain annoying tasks.

Identify and resolve potential problems with System Mechanic Pro

Mechanic_pro Keeping your PC free of glitches is crucial for preventing problems escalating into potential disasters. The trouble is we often find something more important to do than pro-actively check our system for faults, even though most are easily corrected. A good solution for many would be maintenance and diagnostic suite that would help to identify current problems, but also protect you from any potential threats too.

System Mechanic Pro 7.5.11 is an all-in-one suite that helps with all aspects of system maintenance. It enables you to diagnose, correct and prevent an array of problems. It also enables you to recover accidentally deleted files and completely wipe your drive, preventing anyone from recovering it.

Add a speed dial option to Firefox with Fast Dial

Grabjunky Although your bookmarks are convenient, if you have a large number of bookmarks, in various sub-folders, finding the correct bookmark isn't always so easy. Opera has a neat feature which enables you to set up a speed dial function, so when you open a new tab, you're presented with a number of your favourite websites, as mini images, which enables you to quickly click on an image an open within your browser.

Fast Dial 1.89 is a free add-on for Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 that enables you to add a speed dial option to the browser. You can configure each tab to open up with a particular number of pre-set web pages and quickly jump to the site when you click on an image. It works well and it's a worthwhile addition to your browsing experience.

Synchronise your Firefox 3 bookmarks with Mozilla Weave

Logo We've featured Mozilla Weave before, but now Firefox 3 has reached release candidate status, we thought we'd feature it again. Why? This official add-on will enable you to synchronise your Firefox 3 bookmarks across different computers, whether they run the PC, Mac or Linux version of Firefox 3 and wherever they are located. All you need to do is have Mozilla Weave installed on each computer and your bookmarks will be synched automatically.

Mozilla Weave intends to go far further in the future. For example, Mozilla hope that they'll be able to enable you to share all or a selection of your bookmarks with other users. So, say you and a cousin are both Boro fans (I know, who isn't?), you could share related bookmarks with each other. These and other features are still forthcoming, but Weave is definitely an add-on worth installing.

CS3 users: test drive Adobe Dreamweaver CS4

Logo_2 If, like us, you're a big fan of Dreamweaver and tend to use it daily to produce work for clients or even to edit your own homepage, you were probably quick to upgrade to Dreamweaver CS3, on release. We did, but primarily because it was required after an upgrade to Windows Vista. In hindsight, apart from an 'upgrade' to support Vista, there were few compelling reasons to upgrade. Even fewer reasons if you were a Mac Dreamweaver-based developer.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
has been released as a public preview and, like Adobe Fireworks 10 CS4, if you are an existing CS3 user, you can use this version for up to a month after the final release of Dreamweaver CS4, due later this year. This new version ships with a live preview function, so you can see how your pages look, live. It also has a brand new user interface and more. There are many core code changes in this version, so looks like more of a compelling release.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Preview link.

What's this? Fireworks 10 - the first CS4 preview

Logo We've always been big fans of the 'old' Macromedia Fireworks, using it from the late 90s when it was tied to Dreamweaver and was designed as a tool to edit images you placed on your site. It's such a simple package for editing and creating graphics for a web page. We use it daily to produce graphics for both our disc and online work. As it's the same on both the PC and Mac, it means that there's no learning of a new product when we need to make quick online changes.

Adobe Fireworks 10 is the first public preview of the CS4 suite and Adobe have made a version available to current CS3 users, who can download and use the image editor for up to a month after the public release of CS4, expected later this year. The new Adobe Fireworks 10 (CS4) ships with a brand new user-interface which should be mirrored across the PC and Mac (we hope, but we've only tested the PC version so far*), as well as a host of new features.

Adobe Fireworks CS4 Preview link.

*we have now tested Fireworks CS4 on a Mac and it ships with an almost identical updated interface across both the Windows and Mac platform, which is a first for the CS Suite. If you're a Mac user, it's worth testing the new Fireworks CS4.

Take control of files and folders on your hard disk

Untitled5 Defragmenting your hard drive can be frustrating, there’s never a convenient time to do it. Many of us will simply buy or download a defragmentation application, then let it go to work on our machine. We know is ‘cleaning’ our hard disk, but what is it doing with these files, where do they go?

Most applications will simply remove or condense folders and files to one area of your drive. Other applications enable you to specify where items are placed on your system, which improves the speed at which they can be accessed.

UltimateDefrag Freeware Edition 1.72 is a unique tool that enables you to perform very specific defragmentation routines, right down to individual folders and files. You can also organise applications ahead of others to different areas of your drive, giving you optimum performance.

Manage, convert and listen to your music on the go

Jetaudiograb_2 Managing your audio files should be pretty straight forward, but from time-to-time you can get caught out with file formats. Not all MP3 players play different formats, and some are restricted to particular types of compression. You may need to heavily compress your audio files to fit them on to your player, or you may want to listen to them at the highest quality available. Wouldn’t it be preferable to use a more versatile media player that gives you these options?

JetAudio Basic 7.1
will recognise and copy numerous audio formats, enabling you to convert and add them to a portable player, even converting any audio files already on your machine. You can even use the Jet Audio website to access a selection of online radio stations.

Tweak & optimise XP or Vista using TuneUp Utilities 2008

Grabjunky Install an Windows-based operating system and it won't be optimised for your PC. For instance, the various network settings won't recognise the type of Internet connection, nor will the graphic drivers be tweaked for your graphics card. Of course, you can manually tweak and optimise your drivers, OS and other settings. For instance, it's relatively easy to download an application to manage your network connection or optimise your hard drive.

TuneUp Utilities 2008 is a suite of tools brought together under one interface that will make the tweaking and optimising of your operating system more effective. However, it also goes further by enabling you to find and locate deleted files, defragment files and much more.

Take all your apps on the road with PortableApps Suite 1.1

Grabjunky If you own an iPod and wonder what you could do with it, apart from storing and playing back your music, you could easily turn it in to an external hard drive and use it as a portable device for your applications. A couple of years ago, the guys over at PortableApps produced a suite of portable applications, so you could install a suite on to your removable drive and then take the app collection on the road. Better still, any data or preferences written to the drive, remains on the drive and not the host computer.

PortableApps Suite Standard 1.1 is an updated version of the collection of portable apps, including Mozilla Thunderbird, Firefox and OpenOffice. The latest version has all the most up-to-date portable apps, along with an improved installer and many other tweaks.

Create a database of useful links with Read It Later

214aa The Internet can be overwhelming when researching a particular subject and you may come across hundreds of websites, pages or blogs on a particular subject matter. Ok it’s great for referring to, but how many of us have the time to sift through that amount of information? Another problem is remembering links and web addresses of numerous sites, it’s almost impossible unless you jot them down. It would be much easier to grab links, build up a database and browse them at a later date.

Read It Later 0.8 is a useful firefox add-on that enables you to add links, external pages and other information which may be referred to as you wish. Simply click your right mouse button and store; it will also work in conjunction with the Foxmarks browser syncing tool.

Create professional PDF documents with Jaws PDF Creator

Suite_logo Before email the standard form of business communication was via fax, and sending them was often convoluted and time consuming. Transferring documents has since become easier however, because there are numerous file formats depending on your word processor, compatibility can still be an issue. Now PDF files have become the universal file format for viewing business documents and other information.

Jaws PDF Creator 5 enables you to create professional standard PDF documents for distribution. Suitable for single users, small offices and larger businesses for creating, managing and annotating PDF documents within a single application.

Keep online information secure with AI RoboForm

Robograb It is not uncommon to forget passwords and other online information, let’s face it; many of us have a number of passwords for different sites such as eBay, Hotmail or Facebook. The trouble is, it’s not safe to write them down or even save the information on you’re computer and if someone has access to your computer they then have all your personal information. It would be far easier if your information could be securely stored, but still accessible for online forms when you browse the web.

AI RoboForm 6.9.89 is a well established form filling tool that’s been around for a number of years. As well as keeping your sensitive information secure, it enables you to fill in online forms quickly and easily. The latest version support Netscape 9, Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer.

Easily communicate with colleagues using PopMessenger

Untitled4_2 Instant messaging, apart from actually speaking to someone directly or on the phone, is one of the easiest ways of communicating with friends, family or work colleagues. Some IM clients are aimed at younger audiences, but there are more business orientated applications available, which are extremely useful for communicating with colleagues within a workplace. It’s an easy to use system and almost instantaneous, so there’s no need to wait on undelivered emails.

PopMessenger 1.62 is an IM client that once logged on; enables users to retrieve messages received offline. You can also send group messages which feature the time and date of sent messages, which could be very useful in the workplace.

East-Tec Backup 2007: free commercial software worth £20

Boxshot Backing up data to CD or DVD isn't a task many of us enjoy. What's the point? The disc is soon out of date, so you'd probably back to burn data to a disc once a week, or more, to make backing up your data, worthwhile. Most of us do not realise that we're given free web space when we sign up to broadband, so there's no reason we can't use this to backup our most important files and other data.

East-Tec Backup 2007 is our free full commercial download this week, worth £20. It will enable you to backup the traditional way (to disc, or external drive), but you can also backup to a remote FTP site or your web space. Of course, you can restore your data at any time in the future, too. Schedule a regular backup and you can be assured that your backup data is always up-to-date.

Auto-check your web-based email with Gmail Notifier

Logojunky_2 Working for a large organisation means you'll also have to abide by their rules and regulations. These often stipulate that you can't use your work email for personal matters, such as trying to organise a vacation. The problem is, you can't install another email client and you can't keep opening your browser to check whether you have received new email.

Gmail Notifier 0.6.3.3 is an add-on for Firefox that places an icon in the bottom right hand side and will inform you if you have new email through your Gmail account. You can then click the icon, when it's safe to do so, and quickly read your email. The add-on can be used with Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 and across your Windows, Mac and Linux version of the browser.

Search for your favourite video clips with Clipfinder

Clipfinder Those of us who use the Internet have used portals such as YouTube, whether to find humorous video clips, music videos or reminisce over old television programs. Many of us that have used online portals often use them for particular footage and we tend to have favourite clips. So, rather than searching through numerous sites for similar videos, wouldn’t an application that does this for you save time?

Ashampoo Clipfinder 1.41 is a useful plug-in that enables you to search for your favourite videos across multiple online portals. You can add a number of video websites to be searched such as YouTube, MyVideo, VideoU and many more.

Ad-Aware 2008 now available for download

Logojunky Look through our most popular downloaded software and it's dominated by security software. For a good reason: these titles have proved to be the most successful within their field, over a period of time. It's been a long time coming, but the major update to Ad-Aware has been made available and it's finally available to download.

Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition includes better detection and support for hunting and removing rootkit from your PC. The new version has a much smaller and more lightweight memory footprint, so it utilises fewer resources than the previous version. It also supports the 64-bit version of Vista, so if you have this edition, this anti-spyware tool may be worth considering.

Quickly locate open windows or apps using DExposE2

Grablarge If you use an Apple Mac for serious work, you'll know that Expose is one of the better new technologies that was recently added to the operating system. It enables you to quickly show open applications and windows, then select the window you want to bring to the front by simply pointing to the open window. Windows Vista enables you to scroll through open applications, but if you have a fair few windows on screen, it takes longer to find the open window than using the Mac Expose.

DExposE2 is a free Expose-type tool for your PC that will enable you to create a key combination where you would see all open windows and applications. It works, too, enabling to quickly see all open windows and then selecting the one you want to bring to the front.

Optimise your Registry using the free Quicksys RegDefrag

Grabjunky Like anyone else, you'll spend time installing and testing new software. That's fine, as we all want to see if there's better software than our current installed application. However, if you install and remove over a period of time, we'll soon find our system slows, takes longer to boot, applications are more sluggish and we wonder what we can do to make our system perform like it did when we first bought our PC. It's not a hardware issue, it's simply our Registry cluttered with irrelevant information which means our PC takes longer to find the relevant information.

Quicksys RegDefrag 1.1 is a free Registry defragmentation tool that will enable you to remove the deadwood from your Registry and optimise your PC. You should notice a difference with a leaner Registry.

Quicksys RegDefrag 1.1 link.

Manage your archives using the free PeaZip 2.1

Grabjunky If you want to share media with other users, the wisest solution would be to archive the files and then provide them for download on your homepage. However, ZIP up large JPEG photos and you'll soon realise your free 50MB homepage isn't that extensive, after all. The problem isn't your archive, it's the compression chosen to compress your media files. ZIP is antiquated technology and wasn't designed to get the most from modern media files. You can compress modern files more effectively with a more recent compression format.

PeaZip 2.1 is an archive manager that will enable you to open, create and manage archives in many different formats, including ZIP, TAR, RAR and many others. You can password protect an archive, securely create the archive and more. There's also a portable version which you can use to take on the road.

PeaZip 2.1 and PeaZip Portable 2.1 links.

Full commercial download: Serif Page Plus 8 PDF worth £50

Box Earlier today we discussed designing your own artwork, if you're a software developer. We mentioned that you could use Quark to do this, but it's rather expensive and not suited to a novice designer. However, we completely forgot to mention that we have a full commercial download that will enable you to design your own artwork, newsletters, invitations, documents and more.

Serif Page Plus 8 PDF Edition is our current full commercial application, worth £50. This is a fully-fledged desktop publishing (DTP) tool that enables more flexibility for designing your own documents, than a word processor or similar application. With a DTP tool, you can just drop in your text, images and other media anywhere on the page. With Serif Page Plus 8 PDF Edition, you can then export to a commercial-quality PDF document, suitable for commercial printing.

Test software and host a virtual PC with Virtual PC 2007 SP1

Medium_2 If you're like me, you'll love to download and test the latest software. However, whilst 99.9% of commercial software is problem free, security developers would have us think that any potential software - even from commercial brands - has a potential trojan, virus or other issue that could affect your PC. Of course they're going to make you worried. They want to sell you security software.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1
has free (yes, free) commercial virtual operating system software that will enable you to host another copy of Windows (XP, Vista) on top of your existing installation. This would enable you to test software, upgrades, new drivers and do a lot more with the OS, without worrying about breaking or causing problems. The new SP1 adds more functionality, such as the ability to host a Vista SP1 or XP SP3-based OS.

Backup your Mozilla-based preferences with MozBackup

Screengrab_2 Backup applications are fine if you can find and select the files you want to backup. The problem is, most users have no idea how applications such as Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird store their preferences. Where are the bookmarks located, for example? The problem is that we spend ages configuring applications such as our browser and email client and we won't want to lose this information.

MozBackup 1.4.8 is a free backup tool designed for Mozilla applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Sunbird etc) that enables you to automatically backup and then restore your bookmarks, preferences, personal configuration and more. Simple tool, but an ideal way of storing preferences for applications where you can't easily see the files you need to backup. The latest version includes Firefox 3 in the list of Mozilla applications it will support.

We're nearly there: Firefox 3 RC 1 is now available

Firefox_logo We've been blogging about Firefox 3 since Summer 2007, where we first stated that it was due to be released during October/November 2007. More than half a year later, we've finally reached release candidate 1 stage, meaning the final release is probably due in June or July at the latest. Expect at least one or two further release candidates before the final build.

Although it is generally code complete, there are a few minor visual changes between beta 5 and RC1. Strangely though, not every beta 5 compatible add-on will work with Firefox 3 RC1, meaning that they must have made some changes under the hood.

Firefox 3 RC1 is a very stable browser and has been my browser of choice for months. Combined Firefox 3 with the Mozilla Weave add-on and you can sync your bookmarks and other info across your browsers, wherever they are installed.

Design your own software artwork using TBS Cover Editor

Screengrab As an ex-software developer, designing covers for software wasn't always easy. The printer will send through the spec of how you need to design your artwork and you'd need to master Quark or InDesign to layout the document. If you then needed to switch between different commercial printers, you'd have to make tweaks to the master document. For most developers, this isn't their specialist area, so they'd have to pay for an artist or layout designer to produce their artwork.

TBS Cover Editor 1.1 is a relatively new tool that enables software developers to produce a box image as a printable document in a format accepted by most commercial printers. It ships with pre-defined areas, so you just need to drop in your artwork, text and other elements.

Synchronise files across computers using SugarSync

Sugarsync_500x75 I'm generally fairly wary of applications that claim they can synchronise files across your computers or via the Internet. Frankly, they rarely work as they should. Throw in different operating systems in to the mix and you'll find it's difficult to synchronise your PC documents to your Mac and vice-versa.

SugarSync is a desktop and online tool that really does work. If you have more than one PC or a combination of PCs and Macs, then you can use this tool to make sure the files you want to sync are automatically sync'ed between the machines. For instance, if you use more than one machine to edit a website, make sure the files are synchronised across your work PC, home Mac and your laptop.

It's all seamless, too. Just install the desktop tool, select the files you want to synchronise and SugarSync will do the rest. It uploads the files to a private and secure online storage area and, when you login from the other machine at a later date, compares the files on the remote server and your PC, then downloads updated files, so they are always in sync.

However, SugarSync goes even further. You can also login to your secure online vault and download files manually, if you do not want to synchronise them with a host PC. So, if you were using a third-party PC but required access to certain documents, you could download temporarily and then upload without leaving a trace on the host PC.

SugarSync has various monthly or yearly subscription plans and offers 10GB free for the first 45 days.

Get Cyberlink YouCam 1 for free with Computeractive 267

Original1 Chat with friends and family via an instant messenger or other video-based client and it's the same old video chat that can make you look rather formal, boring and unexciting. There are times when you might want to spice up the chat and add a bit of fun to the video call. For instance, if your nephew is on the other side of the world, celebrating his 10th birthday, it would be ideal if you could set up a video call with a birthday theme, which will appear as if you're holding a party on his behalf, at home.

Cyberlink YouCam 1 is our free full commercial download in the latest edition of Computeractive, issue 267, which is on-sale right now. This tool enables you to add effects and themes to your outgoing video calls, through your instant messenger clients.

Take this useful app on the road

Winsnap_portable Many people have programs or utilities they prefer to use, especially if they work with computers on daily basis. Some small utilities make certain tasks far easier if you are used to doing things within certain applications. The trouble is, there may be the odd occasion where you may have to use a different computer, and working from a machine without your favourite apps could hamper your work rate. Unless of course, you keep portable versions of your favourite applications on a portable drive so you can take them with you.

WinSnap Portable 2.1.3 is the portable version of a very useful screen capture tool. Although it’s small, it could prove indispensible for certain tasks. This tiny tool can now be taken with you, for use whenever you might need it.

Build your own website quickly and easily with Visual Site Designer

Iconfull026 There are various applications available to help you create websites, but many of them still require you to have a basic knowledge of building web sites or pages. However, if you have no understanding of how websites are put together, but you want to create your own site, is there a solution? Luckily, some website builders enable you to create sites by dragging and dropping text and images into pre defined templates, providing numerous options for colour and layout so the finished article could look completely different to the initial template.

CoffeeCup Visual Site Designer 5.9.4 is an easy-to-use what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) website builder. Simple enough for even the most inexperienced user to use and understand. Although not the most complex, almost anyone can achieve professional looking results with this application.

Protect your PC at no cost with Avast!

Avast Although we are constantly warned of online threats, it’s almost inevitable that we encounter some form of malicious software. Whether it’s spam in our inbox, or a full on virus, even the most comprehensive antivirus packages will not provide protection against all threats. Luckily, the average computer user is aware of the potential threats posed by browsing the web. So is it really necessary for the average user purchase an expensive security package?

Avast! Home 4.8.1195 is a free yet capable antivirus package that’s well equipped to deal with general online threats. It has an access scanner, on demand scanner and it will also scan your inbox, everything you’d need to protect your PC.

Manage and organise your downloads with HiDownload

Untitled1_2 Even with a fast broadband connection, downloads can sometimes seem painfully slow. However, with the right download manager, it’s possible to increase download speeds without changing your broadband connection. Multi-threaded download managers split files into several parts, or sometimes download from multiple sources simultaneously. Using such an application will also enable you to schedule, monitor and resume broken downloads, amongst other helpful features.

HiDownload 7.17 is a multi-threaded download manager that enables you to download single or multiple files from web or FTP sites. Whilst you’re downloading, it attempts to maximise your connection speed whether you’re downloading single or multiple files and you can also use it to stream audio and video files.

Make your analogue recordings more accessible with REAPER

Reaper_2 Importing audio files and adding them to your audio library isn’t always straightforward, especially if you’re extracting from an analogue source. Rare or original recordings over a certain age would not have been recorded digitally, and some recordings may still only be available in analogue formats. If you do have original, live or rare recording, how do you add them to your library and make them more accessible?

REAPER 2.205 is a recording, editing and mixing tool for rendering audio. Use it to create original compositions, or use it to extract and edit audio files for exporting to your music collection. This makes listening to your old tracks much more user friendly, you can even put them on your portable MP3 player.

Enhance Live Messenger with Messenger Plus!

Messengerplus Most of us are familiar with, or have used an online chat service such as Live Messenger. It seems we cannot get enough of communicating with our friends and family, especially if it’s free. Even the social networking community Facebook has now incorporated the facility to chat amongst online friends. The trouble is, communicating in this way can often be tedious, and it’s difficult to communicate with more multiple users simultaneously.

Messenger Plus! Live 4.60 is an add-on for Windows Live Messenger that ships with numerous features that enhance functionality. These features include multi-chat within a single window, message shortcuts and it also has a fully customisable interface.

Keep locked files free with Unlocker

Screengrab2 When moving folders and files, it’s frustrating when you come across a ‘locked’ file which cannot be deleted or moved. You may be required to shutdown or restart your computer, the file then becomes free again, but restarting your machine time and again just to organise files can be extremely laborious. It would be handy if these files could remain free or unlocked at all times, after all, moving files shouldn’t be that difficult.

Unlocker 1.87 is a basic tool that enables you to move or delete system files whenever you need to. It does this by freeing up system resources which may be locking a file and in turn, keeps it free to move or delete as you wish, Just click your right mouse button whenever you require.

Relive those classic games with MAME

Screengrab_2 People have very different ideas of what a good game is, but most of us recognise good graphics when we see them. It seems though that’s all alot of modern games have to offer, so how did computer games in the past become so successful and are still recognised today? Classic games such as Tetris were not reliant on graphics, but game play, and like many other games from the past it was the original idea and addictive game play that made it a huge success.

MAME 0.125 is an application designed to emulate classic computer games by using old data files. You can use web archives to source files, giving you a choice of thousands of games from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. If you’re an avid gamer, or using it to reminisce, its great fun.
