Syncplicity v SugarSync: backup and synchronisation tools

Junkylarge With the rise in fast broadband, it's going to be relatively easy to store and share our files, online, without having to open up our computer and give access to remote users. Incremental backup means that, once the initial backup is complete, only files we've altered since the last backup will be backed up online, meaning that backing up our data will be a relatively quick process, in the future.

We recently discussed SugarSync which is a backup and file synchronisation tool that will enable you to take the files you want to backup from your PC and then store them in an online account. Install SugarSync on another computer and you can then synchronise the files from your online account back to the other computer. If the other computer is a Mac, you could synchronise your documents folder between PC and Mac and vice-versa.

Junkylarge2 Syncplicity is similar, but has both advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that it's very easy to use, well-designed and enables you to select folders to share with other Syncplicity members. You simply select the folder you require to share, choose the users who you want to give access and then share. You can give them simple read-only access or full read/write capabilities. The main disadvantage with Syncplicity is that there is no Mac client, so no sharing or synchronising to and from your Mac.

We have both a SugarSync and Synplicity account and prefer the design of Syncplicity. It's more professional in appearance. Either way, both SugarSync and Syncplicity have free trial accounts you can choose to use to see which is the best for your situation.

Thanks for the great review, Download Junkie. Just wanted to let you know that a Mac version is on its way and should be arriving sometime this summer. We love - and use! - Macs on a daily basis and can't wait to get our hands on a Mac client, either.
