
Buy yourself the quiet Mac Mini, disconnect it from an LCD screen and then use it as a standalone media server. You could even hide it in a cupboard or other storage area and access wirelessly. It's easily possible. Simply use iTunes to control your media connection and then buy an Airport Express for every device where you want to play back your audio. For instance, the stereo in your kitchen could be named as 'Kitchen', whereas your powerful hi-fi in the sitting room given a 'Sitting Room' reference. You can then stream the same audio track to multiple speakers, so you can listen whilst you move between rooms.
