If you use your PC for important work, you shouldn't be installing and testing new software on your machine. Indeed, most corporations will prevent you from installing software for the sole reason that this can cause your system to fail. However, if you do want to use and test new software, the best option may be to install a virtual operating system where you can run another OS and create a restore point so you can go back to a previous state in the future, without it affecting your main OS.
VirtualBox 2 is a new version of the free virtual manager from Sun. The new version now enables you to use 64-bit virtual machines, improved networking capabilities and, if you're using the OS X version, an improved user-interface.
