Whilst some of the heavyweight commercial developers release their office suites every few years (and we wait around in the meantime, keen to upgrade), the free office suite developers are getting new features in to their products every few months. OpenOffice 3 was a huge upgrade, particularly for Mac OS X users, which was the first native version on this operating system. Lotus Symphony is equally as substantial and this is a truly free Microsoft Office compatible office suite you can use across your Windows, Mac or Linux-based computers. Try doing that with your commercial office suite. It is still a very large download. When I installed it and tried to run a program, it was very slow and the spreadsheet took ages to open.
There are other office suites that are smaller and faster, even OpenOffice is faster that Symphony.
There is also SSuite Office. Their office suites are very small and run very fast.
