Creating your own website can seem daunting when you have little understanding of the applications and languages needed to create one, and many people and small businesses turn to professionals to create a site for them. However, paying programmers to build a site from the ground up can soon become costly once you factor in hosting and maintenance. Although a site built professionally will be well made, it may not be worth investing in if you don't have the funds and it may be Worthing trying a simple WYSIWYG web builder to create your own site.

We're looking forward to the new version of Opera. It's a superb, fast and well-designed web browser that makes using the Internet a breeze. The only downside for us is that you can't synchronise your bookmarks and other information, through a third-party synchronisation tool such as Xmarks, which supports Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and now Google Chrome ( in beta). No Opera support yet, which is a shame. Would have been good to use Opera at home, with either the standard IE or Firefox browser at work.

Opera 10 RC is now available and ships with a host of new features. It still doesn't contain the Unite features which are being kept separate within the beta Unite browser, which is available from Opera Labs.

If your new computer shipped with basic security software, you may be unaware that it is still susceptible to a whole host of online threats. When you get your new machine up and running, it may be worth investing in a solid all-in-one security package that will protect your computer from viruses as well as identify potential threats and be capable of removing such items. Most new computers are woeful enough to record and edit audio if equipped with the right kind of software, software that would have once been far too expensive for the average person to justify. Industry standard applications such as Logic and Cubase will obviously produce fantastic results in the right hands but you may be surprised to learn that there are some very able and inexpensive solutions available.  

REAPER 3.103 is a relatively inexpensive audio editor and mixer that ships with all the usual features found in more expensive editors including MIDI support, time stretching and pitch correction. It's also compatible with all the main standards for plug in effects and virtual instruments including VST and VSTi.

For those of us in the UK, all analogue television broadcasts will be switched off by 2012 and be superseded by an array of new, high definition services. Gradually though, many f us are beginning to use their computers to access new and more interesting programs. Why not use your PC to play to tune in and play MPEG-2 video streams? You could even record them to your hard drive and watch them at a later date.

ProgDVB 6.12.1 is a freeware application that enables you to record programs, display full screen TV and even decode HD streams. Although it's a good tool for watching satellite and streaming TV on your PC, setup can be confusing for newcomers.

With numerous online portals offering film trailers, movie clips and music videos we inevitably come across videos which we'd like to keep and browse offline. Unfortunately many of these online portals offer a view-only policy, which is frustrating as this prevents the video from being downloaded.

Ashampoo ClipFisher 1.21 makes it possible for you to obtain such online videos. Simply copy the video's current http:// address from the web browser and paste it into Ashampoo ClipFisher will then begin downloading the video directly on to your hard drive. The application also enables users to obtain view-only videos from portals such as YouTube and GoogleVideo, enabling you to create your own video libraries.

Deleting old data to make space for newer files and folders is no longer necessary with the use of external drives. This is because external hard drives are much more affordable than they once were. There are numerous benefits to storing everything you need, but that's not to say there aren't any downsides. Keeping track of externally connected devices such as printers and scanners can be difficult enough, without the risk of accidentally disconnecting a storage device containing important files and folders.

USBDeview 1.42 is a useful tool that lists all USB devices connected to your PC, including previously used devices. The application will display information on connected hardware such as device names and descriptions and even serial numbers for mass storage devices.

As well as being the world's largest online music store, iTunes is the most commercially successful music managing applications ever produced, for both Mac and PC. The success of iTunes is mostly down to its usability, but that's not to say it doesn't have its faults. One of the most frustrating thing about iTunes is that it does not enable you to perform any tasks directly from your iPod, without using and iTunes equipped machine, which can be completely impractical if on the move, you maybe travelling abroad and have no access to a computer, let alone one equipped with iTunes.

Greater connection speeds are one of many benefits of using  broadband, not to mention reliability. Although FTP clients are no longer necessary since the development of modern web browsers, they are still useful in certain circumstances and especially if you regularly download files. They are also an efficient way of quickly uploading data.

FileZilla 3.2.7.1 is an FTP client that enables you to transfer files to and from the Internet with ease. By using the client alongside a good broadband connection, it's possible to administer a remote site or take advantage of any free homepage space you may have to upload files more efficiently.

As many of us are buying our media online, we may choose to store these audio tracks on a partition on our drive. Problem is that if our computer suffers from a major system failure, it's not always possible to go back to the site to download the purchased tracks. The solution is to keep your drive or a drive partition backed up to a safe area, so if you do suffer from drive failure or you simply can't access your PC, you can quickly restore the entire drive or partition back to the replacement. Indeed, by backing up your drive, you can quickly restore the content to a new machine, making it easy to move around your most important content.

When undertaking a project it's important to identify and outline each individual job that's required for completion. There are a number of different task and/or project management tools available that can be used to stay organised and on top of your workload, ranging from simple freeware tools to larger more expensive alternatives. Such applications may help you manage a number of different areas of a project, from assigning tasks to costs involved with completing a project.

Task Coach 0.74.90 enables users to manage both individual and multiple tasks and is cross-platform so it can be used with Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Unfortunately though, the application only supports single users but the developer intends to migrate the tool so that this information can be shared.

You may think that having a PC that's equipped with applications for every conceivable task may be a good idea, but the reality is that installing lots of different programs could eventually cause problems as they solve. When you install any application, data is submitted to your Windows Registry which may lead to applications automatically starting as your machine boots which not only makes booting slower, but once an application is uninstalled those problematic Registry entries may remain.

Autoruns 9.53 is a utility designed so that a user can obtain a list of any applications that are launched as your PC boots. This list can then be used to identify and locate any files that are related to installed applications, enabling you to disable any problematic items.

No matter how cheap phone calls from both landlines and mobiles have become, it's still far more costly than instant messaging, especially if you have friends and family abroad. Communicating in this way enables you to talk to people on a one-to-one basis as well as in groups. However, one downside is that because there are so many different messaging clients available it's pretty unlikely that all your friends and family will be using the same one.

Miranda 0.8.4 enables you to communicate across almost anyone, irrespective of IM network. All status icons are included for other networks and your contacts are consolidated onto a single list. Unfortunately the application doesn't support all advanced features that ship with some IM tools, but it's a small price to pay for the convenience of using a single application.

Most decent graphics cards will ship with a number of display options. These settings are often pre-configured on the card installed on your machine, providing basic and usually pretty limited adjustments. These basic options may not be ideal for getting the most from your display setting and you may not even be able to manually adjust certain areas. If you want a stylish PC, there's no reason why you couldn't buy any Intel-based Mac, install the supplied Bootcamp (part of OS X) and run Windows natively on this Mac. You can switch back to OS X at any time, if you also like to use OS X.
